Summary
The Case
“Zoe’s Reprise” begins at a Cleveland book signing, where criminology student Zoe Hawkes tells Rossi she suspects a serial killer is behind the city’s jump in homicides. Because the victims, methods and causes of death all differ, he gently rules it out but urges her to keep looking for answers. That night she visits the home of a recent victim, Kayla James, and a stranger approaches her there. In the morning Detective Dan Brady calls Rossi: Zoe has been found beaten and strangled with her own scarf, his card on her body.
Rossi cuts short his leave and brings in the team. Laid side by side, the killings form a sequence: a man lured from a gay bar and shot in Kingsbury Run, echoing Cleveland’s 1930s butcher; a prostitute with a slashed throat, like Jack the Ripper; a couple shot in a parked car with a .44 Bulldog, like the Son of Sam; and Kayla bound and smothered with a bag, like BTK. The unsub is a young, local student of serial killers, still trying on their methods to find his own. Zoe, they decide, surprised him when he returned to relive a crime. The team feeds a story about his signature to crime columnist Paula McConnell. A jogger is garroted on a bike path, then a homeless woman is strangled with an alcohol-wiped spot on her forehead. Zoe’s body is examined again, saliva on her forehead yields DNA, and it matches Eric Ryan Olson, a parolee who studied criminology by correspondence in prison and owns Rossi’s books.
Agents tracking Olson from a bar tackle him on a waitress in a park, only to learn she is his girlfriend, Linda Jones. Olson asks for Rossi and hints at more victims to win a deal, while Rossi suggests his forehead kisses twist a parent checking a sick child’s temperature. Linda reveals Olson could only have sex with her in public places, and her list of those places turns out to be his crime scenes, including unknown ones, so no deal is needed. Olson tells Rossi he has no idea why he kills.
The Team
Rossi blames himself for Zoe’s death, and when Hotch warns him not to make it personal, he answers that it already is. He quietly pays for her funeral, which angers her mother, Sheila. Afterward he cancels his remaining book dates, wondering whether his books do more harm than good, and a teammate tells him one of his talks led to an FBI career.
The ending
Spoiler: Rossi tells Sheila that Zoe’s killer will spend his life in prison. She says that brings her no comfort, but agrees Zoe would be pleased he was caught.
Why it stands out
- Amy Davidson guest-stars as Zoe Hawkes, a Rossi admirer who hopes to join the FBI, with Johnny Lewis as her killer and Shannon Woodward as his girlfriend.
- A book on Zoe’s desk, Robert K. Ressler and Tom Shachtman’s I Have Lived in the Monster, is real; Ressler was an FBI agent often credited with coining the term “serial killer.”
