Summary

“Transitions” opens with an unidentified man found beaten outside the strip club Sugar Pops, his groin badly injured, a fake fingernail in his back and a woman’s saliva on his body. He is in a coma, carrying only a photo labeled “Dad and Henry, age 5.” Fin and Munch question dancers and Frankie, the bouncer; a regular named Sid Gabbert saw a dancer argue with the man by a tow truck. The truck identifies him as repo man Mark Van Kuren, and the car he was seizing belongs to Molly Lambert, a doctoral student from a wealthy family who dances as “Misty” for her research. Her recordings show the encounter was consensual and that she went back inside.

Mark wakes with no memory and blames his estranged wife, Ellen, amid a custody fight. Ellen explains that their 13-year-old child, born Henry, is a transgender girl named Hailey, and that Mark refuses to allow hormone blockers. Hailey punched her mother the night of the attack, and school counselor Jackie Blaine describes several fights at school. Hailey suddenly says she attacked her father, but no parent was present, so the statement cannot be used. A search of her room turns up stolen transition drugs taken from pharmaceutical warehouses by a group called the Children of Ariel. Blake, a trans man in the group whom Hailey loves, admits she was with them during the attack; Hailey says she confessed to protect him.

When Hailey says Ms. Blaine told her about her father and a stripper, a detail the police never released, Jackie admits she followed Mark and beat him, and gives up her bloodstained coat. Hailey, who has been cutting herself, collapses at the station. At trial, defense attorney Miranda Pond presents Jackie as Hailey’s protector. Greylek puts Hailey on the stand, but Pond shows she told Jackie many times that she wished her father dead. Cross-examined by Greylek, Jackie reveals she once lived under a man’s name and was sexually mutilated by three men in an attack years earlier.

Spoiler, the ending: Mark asks Greylek to drop the charges, saying none of it would have happened if he had listened to his daughter. She refuses, but after the squad argues the case has no clear right answer, she offers a plea. Jackie pleads guilty and is sentenced to eight years, and Hailey tells her that her father has agreed to let her take the blockers.
