Summary

“Persona” begins at a pharmacy, where Mia Latimer is refused the morning-after pill, scuffles with security and cries rape. She describes a stranger attack in an alley, but spilled oil there shows no sign of a struggle, and her bruises are all where clothing hides them. Suspecting her controlling husband, Brent, Benson and Stabler turn to the downstairs neighbors: Jonah Malcolm, a crime buff with multiple sclerosis, and his wife, Linnie, who has not left Manhattan in over 30 years and fears losing their rent-controlled apartment. Linnie lures Mia downstairs, where Mia admits Brent beat and raped her when she refused to try for a baby.

Brent is charged with rape and assault. His lawyer, Trevor Langan, wins bail, but Brent must stay away from Mia and surrender his guns. With her money cut off and a prenup signed, Mia lets Benson take her to a domestic violence shelter, then recants on video and goes home. Benson waits in the Malcolms’ apartment, joined to the Latimers’ by an old servants’ staircase, and hears Brent attacking Mia, but by the time she reaches them Mia is dying. Linnie blames Benson for pushing her. Brent faces life in prison. Fingerprints Linnie left on the Latimers’ phone match a 1974 killing: Vincent Cresswell, shot six times in his sleep, whose wife, Caroline, escaped before trial.

Linnie admits to the stunned Jonah that she is Caroline; she met him three weeks after escaping and secretly stayed on the pill for fear of losing a child to prison. She tells Benson that Vincent, a poet, beat her for years and raped her the night she shot him, when marital rape was not yet a crime. A lenient outcome seems likely until Elizabeth Donnelly, the original prosecutor, takes leave from the bench to try the case herself and has Linnie arrested. Held without bail, Linnie is allowed to argue she was a battered woman. Donnelly tells Benson that Linnie fled through her office bathroom window during a meeting Linnie had requested, a humiliation that cost Donnelly her career in homicide.

Spoiler, the ending: Under Donnelly’s cross-examination, Linnie reveals she ran because she was pregnant by Vincent and could not get an abortion in jail; she had meant to offer Donnelly a guilty plea once the pregnancy was ended but was too ashamed to ask. The jury acquits her of murder and convicts her of escape. Donnelly, conceding that in those years she forgot why she became a lawyer, recommends probation, and the judge signals agreement. Jonah then learns that Linnie had that abortion while he was at a conference in Seattle, with money he left her, and he tells her he does not think he can forgive her.
