Summary

“Shattered” begins when third-grader Nicholas Olsen is pulled into a van painted with flowers and bunnies on his way home from school. The van copies one owned by a party clown, Gary, whose own van has not run in months, and Fin finds the real one burned out with the boy’s backpack inside. Principal Carol Huston says Nicholas lives with his father, Paul, who has sole custody and a restraining order against the boy’s French mother, Sophie Gerard. School video shows Sophie giving Nicholas an amulet from Tibet that afternoon and telling him not to be scared.

Paul says Sophie, an anthropologist at Columbia who studies matriarchal cultures, kept leaving for fieldwork and wanted to take Nicholas to a remote tribe in China. Sophie denies taking the boy and accuses Paul of lying about her, but a search turns up a French passport for Nicholas and one-way tickets to Beijing, and she borrowed $50,000 from her parents and withdrew $25,000. She names Jason Culross, a former Green Beret who recovers abducted children, and Stabler arrests him after a scuffle at his Red Hook warehouse. Culross says he dropped the job, keeping his fee, once he learned Paul had custody, and was in Brazil the night before.

Sophie’s credit card then pays for a Long Island motel room where a man checked in with a boy. The kidnapper escapes the raid in the clothes of the motel maid, with Nicholas hidden in her cleaning cart, and flees in her car; in the police chase the car goes into the water, killing Nicholas and the kidnapper, Keith Bradman. Cragen wants Sophie charged with felony murder, but she retreats into talk of picking Nicholas up from school, and Huang diagnoses brief reactive psychosis. At the morgue, when Paul arrives, Sophie seizes an officer’s gun, shoots Warner and holds Benson, Marlowe and Paul hostage.

Spoiler, the ending: Warner, her lung collapsing, talks Benson through inserting a chest tube with Marlowe’s help, and Sophie lets Benson wheel her out. Left with Sophie, Paul and the boy’s body, Marlowe tells Sophie about her own breast cancer, double mastectomy and the lover who turned away, and how she came back. Stabler gets inside with word that Paul hired Bradman and used a card in Sophie’s name. Told she is cleared, Sophie turns the gun on Paul, who admits he set up the abduction to keep her from taking Nicholas to China and calls the crash an accident. She is urged to hold her son instead, and the episode ends as Sophie tells Nicholas she loves him; what becomes of Paul is not shown.
