Summary
“Turmoil” begins when Stabler hears from his son Dickie that topless photos of Nikki Sherman, the 15-year-old victim in Cabot’s case against football player Sam Baylor, are going around school, sent to the phone of Dickie’s friend Shane Newsome. In court, Baylor’s lawyer says Nikki recanted and the prosecution hid it, and Judge Petrovsky gives Cabot 48 hours. Liam Black of the state bar opens an inquiry into Cabot, which she ties to Paxton’s drunken courtroom performance. Then Kathy reports that Dickie has disappeared after a fight at school.
Stabler blames Shane, a recovering addict, and confronts Shane’s mother, who throws him out. ATM footage shows Shane using Dickie’s bank card with someone else, and Cragen orders Stabler off the search. Munch finds the photo, which also shows Baylor, and Cabot is furious it reaches her so late. Dickie and Shane had been talking to an army recruiter. At a Harlem homeless shelter where Shane volunteers, the manager names Harold Moore, a drug-addicted man Shane tried to help, and detectives, joined by Stabler against orders, find Dickie beating Harold with a board. Dickie tells Benson he lent Shane the card so Shane could buy forged papers and enlist without his mother’s consent, and insists Shane is clean.
Nikki tells Cabot she was drugged at an earlier team party, where the photo was taken; after Cabot talks to Nikki’s father, the charges against Baylor are dropped. Paxton warns Cabot not to trust the detectives. Shane’s bloodied phone turns up with a dealer, Neal Douglas, and Shane is found dead in an alley, stabbed and stomped; Warner says he died about 36 hours earlier and had been clean for months. Cragen is suspended for ten days, leaving Munch in charge. Douglas says a homeless man traded him the phone for drugs.
Spoiler, the ending: Benson finds Nikki at home after a suicide attempt. Harold is caught and admits he killed Shane for a bank card that would not work, then took his clothes. Cabot refiles against Baylor, adding witness tampering and obstruction: Amy Wagner, the defense witness who claimed Nikki recanted, admits she lied in return for gifts and invitations from Baylor, and Cabot refuses a plea deal. At home, Dickie demands that Stabler sign army consent forms; Stabler refuses, and the two end up in tears.
Why it stands out
- Christine Lahti returns briefly as Sonya Paxton, clashing with Cabot over the state bar inquiry.
