Summary

“Pursuit” opens on a sting for the TV show Neighborhood Predator, where host Alicia Harding confronts a schoolteacher, Eric Carlton, and fires a Taser at him before Fin moves in. Minutes later a production assistant passes her a box from a fake police officer, holding her bloody lucky scarf. The scarf belonged to her 13-year-old sister, Vanessa, who vanished 25 years earlier; only her bloody, knife-slashed clothes were ever found. Executive ADA Sonya Paxton, who has worked Vanessa’s case ever since, insists the threat is real. CSU finds Alicia’s underwear soaking in chlorine in her sink and copies of the police file on Vanessa, which the detectives suspect came from Paxton. Stabler, training at Quantico, relays the FBI view of an experienced predator.

A face in the sting crowd belongs to Scott Laskey, caught in an earlier sting; raw footage shows he was trying to protect the girl, the aired version was doctored, and Cragen has the arrest voided. Alicia blames Donny Spencer, a producer she fired, and Spencer admits sending one threatening email. Then an emailed photo of a dead girl arrives, and Alicia recognizes the park as the last place Vanessa was seen. Defying orders, she follows the detectives to Staten Island, where they uncover six women’s bodies. Warner finds the newest victim, dead three days, had knife wounds to the chest, belly and back, matching the cuts in Vanessa’s shirt. The squad concludes that Vanessa’s killer, rattled by Alicia’s recent on-air appeal for the boy who found her clothes, is stalking her.

Over police objections, Alicia airs a message mocking the killer, a plan Paxton went along with. Benson and Fin find Paxton at an AA meeting, her throat cut in the restroom; she tells Benson she got him and dies. Warner finds a hair in her throat: Paxton bit her attacker for his DNA. Stabler, back from Quantico, finds in the show’s security log a visitor, David Adams, who does not exist and has been dating Alicia’s assistant, Rachel Gray.

Spoiler, the ending: With a trace on Rachel’s call to him, police send her out as bait. When the man appears with a knife, Alicia charges at him and, during the standoff, urges the officers to shoot, but he is taken alive. He is Adam Grafton, 43, a physician assistant who lived near the Hardings and served five years in Lorton for beating and raping a prostitute. Benson persuades a reluctant Alicia to question him for the sake of other families. Grafton shrugs off the charge that he planted Vanessa’s clothes to find them himself, hints that Vanessa may have run away, and claims 43 victims, 44 with Paxton. He begins naming them, starting in Dundalk, Maryland.
