Summary

“Monster’s Legacy” begins when boys’ gymnastics coach Alexei Belyakov is stabbed in the groin with an ice pick beside his car. Suspicion falls on parents he has crossed, but the trail leads to Johnny Dubcek, a maintenance worker at the gym whose gloves and boots carry the coach’s blood. Johnny says the coach abuses his students. Alexei films every session to protect himself, and 90 hours of tape show nothing improper. On the van to Rikers, Johnny tries to strangle a fellow prisoner charged with molesting Boy Scouts, after begging not to be put in with him.

Johnny’s mother says he changed after a summer at an upstate camp run by Martin Schultz, a coach at a neighborhood settlement house. Schultz, who has worked with boys for 50 years, denies any abuse, and the detectives tell Cragen he is a calculating sociopath. The detectives find a dozen of his former campers in prison for violent crimes. One, Reggie Rhodes, is ten days from execution in Ohio for killing Charles Danforth, but refuses to talk. Benson asks Bayard Ellis to seek clemency and spends her vacation days helping him in Cleveland.

Reggie eventually describes being sexually abused from about age five, by an uncle, his mother’s boyfriend, a teacher and, for three summers, Schultz, who passed him to other men. Danforth paid him for sex for a year; one night three other men attacked him in Danforth’s garage, and the next day Reggie killed Danforth. His sister, Kassandra Smith, says his trial lawyer, whom he met the day before trial, refused to hear about it. Despite affidavits from seven jurors, the parole board votes 5–4 against clemency, and Ellis learns that its chair, Angela Brooks, is married to Jim Harrison, who supervised prosecutor Marnie Lathrop at Reggie’s trial. Given less than a day with the prosecution files, Benson finds wider crime scene photos showing gaps in the bloody footprints; Reggie explains that Danforth had Polaroids of the assault.

Spoiler, the ending: Johnny admits Schultz filmed him. With a warrant, the detectives search Schultz’s property; a boy in his care, Pablo, hands over tapes that survived when Schultz had him burn them, and Schultz is arrested. In court, Ellis confronts Lathrop with her own notes to Harrison describing the explicit photos, marked for his eyes only. The judge calls it the most blatant prosecutorial misconduct she has seen in 30 years, grants a stay of execution and urges the county to let the death warrant expire. Reggie will be moved to another prison and may get a new trial.
