Summary
“Girl Dishonored” opens during Hell Week at Tompkins Square University, where sheltered freshman pledge Lindsay Bennett, sent by her sorority to photograph star student Travis Holmes, is raped by Travis and two Tau Omega brothers. Later that night fraternity member Joe Dawson pulls her off a roof ledge. Campus security director Leo Barth treats it as a drunken stunt, but her mother, Eileen, calls the police. Lindsay names Travis, Carter Pressman and Wesley Grimes; campus security let her shower before any rape kit. Travis says she was eager. When he coaxes a topless photo from her and it spreads across campus, Lindsay withdraws her complaint, but she mentions Renee Clark, who accused Travis the year before.
Renee is in a psychiatric hospital, receiving electroconvulsive therapy at her own request from Dr. Emily Sopher. She says Travis raped her before Christmas break; when she reported it in September, Barth said she had waited too long, Dean Meyerson asked about her family and grades, and counselor Talia Blaine warned her off a hearing. After a bad night, campus security pushed her to commit herself. Detectives speak at the school and find more victims, including Alyson, who names Travis and Joe. Joe admits Barth told him to ask Alyson out afterward to test whether she had been raped. Barba convenes a grand jury against the school. Alyson and Renee testify, Renee decides to stop the shock treatments, and Meyerson insists her office reported every complaint.
Spoiler, the ending: Talia then calls Benson: Lindsay has jumped from a campus roof and died, and Rollins blames herself. Joe admits Lindsay told the truth and hands over a cell phone video from the party in which the three brothers boast about the rape. Meyerson offers to resign, but Barba, armed with statements from Talia and campus officers that the school buried reports, charges Travis, Carter and Wesley with multiple counts of rape and names Meyerson and Barth as accessories. At Lindsay’s memorial, Eileen blames the boys and the school. Renee says the school has accepted an offer to supervise her return, and she plans to start a support group for survivors on campus.
Why it stands out
- The case turns on how universities handle sexual assault: the dean cites the Clery Act, the federal law requiring colleges to disclose campus crime, while Barba argues the school kept its numbers low by burying reports.
- Benson mentions an early dinner with Cassidy and his mother, carrying on the relationship revealed in “Undercover Blue.”
