Summary
“Surrender Benson” picks up with William Lewis, out on bail after a mistrial, waiting inside Benson’s apartment when she gets home. He holds her captive, drugging her, forcing alcohol on her and physically assaulting her, and mocks her claim that her boyfriend is on his way: a voicemail from Cassidy says he is stuck on a double shift in the Bronx. When Cassidy mentions he has not heard from her, Cragen sends Fin and Rollins to check on her. They find blood and duct tape in her apartment and her bedding gone. Her phone pings at Lewis’s halfway house in Bushwick, where Jose Silva says Lewis took his aunt’s Lincoln and went to meet the lawyer who got him off.
Cragen interrupts an arraignment to confront that lawyer, Vanessa Mayer, who says she spent the day driving out to Long Island with Lewis and had dinner with him at her parents’ house in Bellport. There the detectives find the Lincoln, with blood and a bedspread in the trunk and Benson’s necklace hidden by the spare tire, and they find Vanessa’s mother bound but alive. After dropping Vanessa at the train, Lewis came back, held Mrs. Mayer at gunpoint and raped her while Benson was made to watch. Driving the Mayers’ car, Lewis then shoots rookie Officer Jimmy Hamilton dead at a traffic stop, uses the patrol car to pull over another driver and takes her minivan. A hardware store clerk recalls him buying rope, a tarp, wire and a blowtorch.
In an empty vacation house, Lewis cuffs Benson to an iron bed and tells her she will not leave alive. She plays along. When a housekeeper, Viva Nunez, arrives with her five-year-old daughter, Luisa, Benson questions his manhood, and by the time she sends them away, warning that police could take the girl if they stay, she has his gun and Lewis is handcuffed. He taunts her, tells a story about his father that he calls the moment he found his purpose, and goads her to shoot him, promising he will beat any trial. She does not fire, but beats him with a metal bar from the bed frame, and the squad finds him barely alive.
Spoiler, the ending: Benson tells investigators she broke free, struggled with Lewis for the gun and hit him with the bar when he lunged at her, choosing not to shoot. The department calls her a hero, and Cragen puts her on mandatory leave for a concussion, a broken wrist and cracked ribs. Cassidy takes her to his place. With her new therapist, Dr. Peter Lindstrom, she says Lewis kept taunting her after he was handcuffed and got to her, though not in the way Lindstrom thinks.
