Summary
“Granting Immunity” begins as Benson takes Noah to his pediatrician, Dr. Lee, for his shots and meets Colleen Dole and her young son, Aiden, in the waiting room. Later that day Principal Hannah Schwartz of Tribeca Academy calls in SVU: nine ninth- and tenth-graders held a “rainbow party” at Savannah Biel’s family loft, and explicit photos have spread through the school. Parents push back at the questioning, among them Trudy Malko, who runs a holistic lifestyle website and is the mother of Colleen’s stepson, Gabriel. Barba agrees there is no statutory rape case, since all the teens are minors, but the photos must be contained, so the squad confiscates students’ phones.
Dr. Lee then warns Benson that Noah was exposed to measles in the waiting room, and Benson works from home with his nanny, Lucy, while he is quarantined. When Noah has trouble breathing, he is rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with measles. TARU finds the party photos on child pornography sites and traces them through a serial number to Larry Heller, son of defense attorney Arlene Heller; she gets Barba to use Larry as an informant against online predators and accuses parents at the school of dodging vaccines. The detectives find that the infected students, including Gabriel and Savannah, all have vaccination forms from Hudson Park Pediatrics. Savannah’s mother admits Dr. Eric Setrakian falsified her daughter’s records, and Malko admits Gabriel was never vaccinated and that she steers other parents to the doctor. Amaro, meanwhile, learns that his son Gil’s mother plans to move with the boy to San Diego.
Barba charges Malko with reckless endangerment, conspiracy and falsifying records, and Setrakian pleads to a lesser count without prison, giving up his license and agreeing to testify. Noah develops pneumonia. At trial, Dr. Rudnick traces the outbreak from Gabriel, who caught measles on a trip to Pacific Palisades, to 48 cases across the city, and Malko’s lawyer gets Benson to admit she delayed Noah’s measles shot on her pediatrician’s advice. Malko confronts Benson in a hallway, then testifies that she blames vaccines for her nephew’s autism, while Barba presses her on the danger her choice posed to others.
Spoiler, the ending: The jury acquits Malko of first-degree reckless endangerment but convicts her of the lesser second-degree count; she is sentenced to three months in jail and nine months’ probation. Amaro says he wants to stay a father to Gil wherever he lives, and Benson believes the worst is over and expects to bring Noah home within days.
