Summary

“Heartfelt Passages” opens as the grand jury adds 28 sodomy counts and 15 counts of forcible touching to the rape charges against corrections officer Gary Munson. The judge refuses Barba’s request to revoke his bail but raises it to $500,000. Munson’s wife, Lisa, privately tells Benson that she got tested and has called a divorce lawyer, and that she is only pretending to stand by Gary until she can get their children out. On Dodds’s last day, the squad says goodbye. Then Lisa calls: Gary has made bail and is home with the kids. Benson agrees to help her leave quietly, and Dodds insists on coming along.

Munson lets them in, and Benson keeps the children busy while Dodds talks with him in the kitchen. As Benson walks Annie and Tommy to the car, Munson pulls a gun, makes Dodds put his own weapon on the table and holds him and Lisa inside. On the phone with Benson, Munson offers to let Dodds go, but Dodds stays and keeps trying to talk him down. Chief Dodds and Lisa’s father, Deputy Inspector Bob O’Brien, arrive as ESU surrounds the house, and Munson stops answering. When Munson cocks the gun, it goes off and Dodds is shot in the abdomen. Meanwhile, the man from the courthouse steps threatens Barba again, and Barba admits he has had calls and texts from burner phones ever since he indicted the officers who shot Terrence Reynolds.

At Lincoln Hospital, surgeons stop the bleeding from a damaged artery, and Benson blames herself for leaving Dodds inside. Mike wakes in intensive care, asks about Lisa and sees his father and his fiancée, Alice Gray, who has flown in from Chicago, but his speech is off and he calls his father by his grandfather’s nickname. Doctors find clots and bleeding in his brain; a massive stroke leaves no hope, and he is kept on machines only for organ donation. Facial recognition identifies Barba’s stalker as Felipe Heredio, a lieutenant in the BX9 gang whose brother the squad sent away for gang rape.

Spoiler, the ending: Dodds is given a police funeral with bagpipes, and the squad raises a toast to him at the wake. Barba picks Heredio out of a lineup; he admits he was paid $250 for each encounter but will not say by whom, and Barba keeps a round-the-clock security detail. Carisi puts his plans to become an ADA on hold, saying he cannot leave now. Benson tells Dr. Lindstrom she should never have left Dodds in the house, and he tells her it was not her time. Tucker tells her he is leaving IAB for hostage negotiation and suggests a trip to Paris, and she likes the idea.
