Summary

“Service” begins when an anonymous 911 call leads Rollins and Fin to a badly beaten young woman in a freezing alley. At the hospital she gives only the name Sky and says she fell. A boot print laced with fresh sidewalk cement points the squad to cheap hotels near repair work, and at the Abington, manager Grigor, who checks no IDs and keeps fake cameras, admits that three men ran from room 117 and that he dumped the woman outside, believing she was dead. He is arrested for endangering an impaired person. Sky checks herself out of the hospital.

Finding her ad online, the squad books her with Carisi posing as a client. Rollins berates her in the interview room until Benson steps in with an apology, and Sky gives her real name, Sandy. Three short-haired men hired her: a nervous young virgin, an older man who demanded free sex and then raped and beat her, and a third man she hit with a lamp before the older man beat and choked her. A money clip left behind points to the Army. Base records show that Sgt. Jim Preston had a head wound stitched; he will give only name, rank and number, and Pvt. Billy Shaughnessy falsely confesses. Sandy identifies Preston and Staff Sgt. Tyler Jones, her rapist. Billy finally agrees to testify against Jones.

Defense attorney James Olson, who knows Stone from Chicago, mocks the case. At trial he suggests violence is part of Sandy’s trade, and Billy disowns his grand jury testimony, saying he would rather be a criminal than a traitor. Sandy tells the squad the self-respect they gave her is gone. Preston, also charged, turns down a misdemeanor deal; then the lab finds that his blood on the lamp is genetically female. Preston is a transgender man who fears losing his Army career. Stone drops his charges in exchange for testimony, and Benson persuades him to take the stand.

Spoiler, the ending: Preston testifies that he heard Sandy scream while Jones was alone with her, and that Jones later beat her and was strangling her when Preston pulled him away. Olson questions him about being transgender, and Preston replies that it has nothing to do with his work. The jury finds Jones guilty of first-degree rape. Rollins apologizes to Sandy, explaining that the cardiologist she has been dating has been seeing escorts while she works late.
