Summary

“Guardian” begins with police stopping Malik Williams and his friend Jerome Freeman after a scuffle at a bodega, where Malik says he was trying to call for help because his 16-year-old sister, Tiana, is being raped in a playground around the corner. Officers find her there. The ER doctor finds injuries consistent with rape, and Tiana has heroin and alcohol in her system. Malik, her legal guardian since their mother went to prison at Bedford Hills, says six young men, one armed, drove him off and kept Tiana; Tiana remembers three. Her bag, with the family’s SNAP food card, is missing.

Someone tried to use the card at a liquor store, and the store’s footage leads to Ray Wallis, a parolee known as “Four Stroke,” who says he got it from young boys boasting about the playground. Fin and Carisi trace them to Dorothy Hall’s grandsons, 14-year-old twins Darryl and DeShawn, and their 15-year-old cousin, Leonard Hanes. With their lawyer, former prosecutor Ron Carter, the boys admit to sex but say Malik offered them his sister for $200, and Leonard pawned his mother’s ring to pay. The squad finds Tiana passed out at Malik’s apartment, and Rollins takes her to the ER while Malik is arrested for child endangerment, drug possession and promoting prostitution. Facing foster care, Tiana now says no one raped her and that it was all her idea. Carter, whose daughter Regina takes Malik’s case, threatens Stone with a press conference comparing the case to the Central Park Five.

Malik’s driver, Bobby Jackson, caught with four kilos of cocaine, hands over a handwritten record of the men Tiana was driven to since she was 14 and testifies at Malik’s trafficking trial in exchange for dropped charges. Called by Stone, Tiana sticks to her story and describes how the family’s money troubles drove her to it. The defense calls their mother, Lashonda, from prison, but on cross Stone brings in Luke Snell, the man she slashed with a razor, and she admits Malik was pimping her out at the time. That night Tiana nearly dies from a dose of heroin strong enough to stop her heart. Jerome, once caught, says Malik told him to take care of her before she could testify.

Spoiler, the ending: Tiana confronts Malik with what their father did to their mother and to him, and says she does not hate him but will testify if she must. Malik takes a plea deal of 15 years. Benson and Fin reflect that Malik was abused as well, which does not excuse him, and Fin heads off to bring pizza to his baby grandson, who has just said “Pop-Pop.”
