Summary
“No Good Reason” opens with entries from the vlog of Mandy Fowler, a 15-year-old sophomore at Wollman High, the last calling October 16 the worst day of her life. Classmates have been sharing a photo from a Saturday party showing her passed out, half undressed and covered in insults written in marker. She then vanishes. Her childhood friend Andrew Drake admits she texted him asking why, and her best friend, Stacey Vanhoven, says only that Mandy is not alone. Mandy livestreams a farewell, and TARU traces it to a Newark apartment rented by Ethan Cohen, someone she had been chatting with on an app that deletes messages. She is there and safe, and Ethan urges her to tell the police she was raped at the party. She remembers smoking a joint and waking up sore and bleeding.
Three boys were at the party with her at the end: the host, Daniel Ross, who supplied the marijuana; Max Rivera, who drew on her and sent the photos; and Andrew, who first admits only to kissing her. Mandy says she never wanted him to. The squad arrests all three at school, Andrew for second-degree rape. In questioning he says they had sex and that she wanted it because she was smiling with her eyes closed. Daniel and Max agree to plead to lesser charges and testify. With Andrew out on bail, students rally to him online and the Fowlers’ home is vandalized.
Mandy then announces on her vlog that she will not testify. Worried about her, Benson and Rollins visit, and Rollins tells her about the cruel nickname she earned as a teenager in Georgia and the tattoo of her own name she got as a reminder that only she defines herself. When Max is beaten in the locker room for turning on Andrew, his father pulls him out of the deal, leaving Barba without a witness. Mandy then admits she has been texting Andrew, who wrote that he was tired of trying to make her like him. Faced with the texts, Andrew admits that Mandy did not consent.
Spoiler, the ending: Andrew takes a plea to third-degree rape with 18 months, four years’ probation and registration as a sex offender, and in court he admits that he knew Mandy was incapacitated and did not consent. Benson is served with a motion from Sheila Porter’s lawyer seeking a psychological evaluation and financial disclosure to challenge her fitness as a parent. At Mandy’s request, Benson leads an assembly at Wollman High where Mandy talks about the bullying, students stand to show they have been hurt, several share their own stories, and a classmate apologizes for not standing up for her.
Why it stands out
- Inspired by the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why; before the season, showrunner Michael Chernuchin described one episode as SVU’s answer to it.
- Brighton Sharbino, known for The Walking Dead, plays Mandy, and Madison Pettis plays her best friend, Stacey.
- Rollins tells Mandy about her own teenage reputation in Georgia, adding to the character’s back story.
