Summary

“Something Happened” begins when sixth graders on a museum field trip find Laurel Linwood shaking and crying. She tells a hospital doctor she was raped, and a rape kit is taken, but she tells Benson she cannot remember anything. Benson stays with her and coaxes out fragments: the smell of Old Spice, the florist she visits each morning, and a nature film of a cheetah running down an antelope, which Laurel uses to argue that every woman is prey. A coworker at the bank where Laurel manages trusts tells the squad her father, a prominent surgeon, was buried the day before, and that her sister, Leah, is a lawyer.

Bit by bit Laurel recalls a bar with soccer on TV, disappointing calamari, a man wearing a Vacheron Constantin watch like her father’s, and a pair of scissors in his Chelsea apartment. A bartender and a ticket receipt identify the man as Greg Harvey. Asked to look at his photo, Laurel turns on Benson and accuses her of pity. Detectives serving a warrant find Harvey dead with scissors in his neck. The rape kit shows he had sex with Laurel, and her fingerprints match a print on the scissors.

Leah agrees to represent her sister. As Benson presses on whether Harvey threatened Laurel, which could mean self-defense, Laurel drifts into a childhood memory of painting the pool house at the family’s Sagaponack home and says she saw their father abusing Leah there. Leah calls it irrelevant, says she is glad he is dead and walks out. Laurel then says her father abused her too, from the age of six. When she turns the questions on Benson, Benson waves off Fin and talks about her own father, Joe, who raped her mother, never looked for her and later killed himself, and his son, Simon.

Benson then catches a slip: Laurel first said their father brought Leah the sweatshirt from his college reunion, then claimed it was hers. Benson suggests that the abuse happened to Leah, not Laurel, and that Laurel grew up jealous of the sister their father chose. Harvey, with the same aftershave and the same watch, was a stand-in for the father she buried that day.

Spoiler, the ending: Laurel admits that she waited until Harvey fell asleep and then stabbed him. She tells Benson she knows she is going to prison.
