Summary
“Paranoia” opens with Sgt. Karen Smythe and her driver, Officer Mitch Murray, answering a silent alarm at a storage warehouse on West 124th Street. Smythe is found in a stairwell, raped and nearly choked, a plastic bag pulled over her head; her gun and wallet are gone. Benson, whom Smythe trained as a rookie, stays at her bedside. Stabler, sick from anti-HIV drugs taken after an exposure on the job, refuses Cragen’s suggestion that he go home.
Smythe recalls that her attacker never said a word. A homeless man holding her ID is cleared, and a near-identical Queens warehouse rape a week earlier suggests a serial attacker. The lab stalls until technician Felicia Young quietly tells the detectives the rapist used a condom but left one hair. They then find the crime scene hosed down, and Internal Affairs lieutenants Coates and Waldman go through their desks and demand their case files.
Munch and Fin learn that Smythe’s ex-husband, Todd, owed a loan shark, Uncle Sammy, $100,000 in gambling debts, half of it mysteriously paid off. Pressed, Sammy claims Smythe herself paid it. When Benson confronts her, Smythe suddenly insists she was never raped and says she had sex with a married ex-boyfriend before her shift. Her finances show no sign of the money, and the Chief of Detectives says there is no case without her. Cabot’s warning that recanting could bring a false-report charge does not move her. Arrested, Sammy admits two cops forced him to forgive the loan; threatened with obstruction charges by Cabot and Cragen, Coates and Waldman say only that a year of undercover work is at stake. Smythe warns Benson off, and the squad is pulled from the case.
Radio recordings show that Officers Austin Bates and Michael Towne announced they were on the scene 26 seconds after Murray’s call for help, though they claimed to be ten blocks away. DNA from cigarette butts Stabler takes from their patrol car matches the hair. The detectives arrest the pair, but IAB has already taken Murray: all three have been guarding shipments for Harlem drug lord Nicky Farnsworth, and Murray has immunity in return for his testimony.
Spoiler, the ending: Murray says Bates and Towne decided Smythe had to be silenced after she was seen with IAB, copied the Queens attack to stage the rape, and that Bates raped her. Smythe tells Benson she has secretly reported to IAB since the academy and recanted so she would not be exposed at a rape trial. Told that a trial could put Smythe in danger, Cabot agrees to ask her bosses to drop the rape charges and let the drug cases go forward. Stabler’s tests come back negative for HIV and hepatitis.
Why it stands out
- Khandi Alexander guest-stars as Sgt. Karen Smythe, the veteran officer who trained Benson.
- The episode resolves the subplot begun in “Victims,” in which Stabler started antiretroviral medication after exposure to an HIV-positive victim’s blood; here he tests negative.
- Scott Sowers’s IAB Lieutenant Waldman returns two episodes later in “Runaway.”
