Summary

“Solving for the Unknowns” opens at a firing range, where Rollins learns she is being promoted to Detective Second Grade. That night Jill Bailey, who runs a cupcake truck, hits a parked patrol car and is arrested for drunk driving, barely over the legal limit but badly impaired. At her arraignment the next day, with Fin in court for another case, she suddenly realizes she was raped. She met a man named Luke on the dating app TrueHeart, had two drinks with him at a downtown bar and remembers nothing until she was struggling to drive. Luke has since deleted their match.

Camera footage shows Jill leaving the bar steadily with Luke, an hour with no video, and Luke walking her, unresponsive, to her truck. A neighbor and a bodega clerk lead detectives to Luke Mitchell, a risk analyst, who calls the sex consensual and complains that the #MeToo movement has gone too far. Jill’s tox screen is negative, and detectives explain that home-brewed sedatives often escape testing. A ViCAP search turns up Rebecca Larson, whose report of a rape by a TrueHeart date named Luke was closed by Brooklyn SVU as unfounded. Both women pick Luke out of lineups. He admits only to choosing bars that pour strong drinks.

Both bars used the same freelance bartender, Ash Gordon, a former chemistry student expelled for running unauthorized drug trials, whom Luke had phoned six times. Jill remembers the two men greeting each other by name, giving Carisi grounds for a warrant. Ash’s apartment yields legal drugs that can sedate and encrypted video folders labeled with Luke’s name and four others. A press conference brings new victims, among them Piper Hill, 28, who had a stroke the night of her assault and is now partly paralyzed. Facing a possible felony murder charge, Luke says Ash spiked drinks to make women compliant and wanted videos he called clinical trials. Sent to meet him, Luke gets Ash to boast that he makes every batch himself, and Ash is arrested.

Spoiler, the ending: Ash gives up the other men in his files, and detectives bring in the fourth, though many of their victims may never be identified. Luke will serve ten years and Ash two, since the drugs cannot be proved to be controlled substances. Piper says she hopes to grow strong enough to speak at the sentencing, so the men know she is a person who matters.
