Summary
“Post-Graduate Psychopath” brings back Henry Mesner, who at ten shot Amaro and was sent to Hesland Juvenile Psychiatric. Now 18, he tells a judge he has learned empathy, his psychiatrist, Dr. Lisa Mackie, says he has outgrown his diagnosis, and his father, Tom, asks to bring him home to his stepmother, Holly, his sister, Ruby, and a young half-brother, Arlo. Some time later, 19-year-old Libby Blandon is found bound in her dorm room, raped, burned with cigarettes and choked by a young man who talked his way in, took her debit card and PIN and left with a white stuffed dog. That morning a stranger gave Rollins’s daughter Jesse a white toy dog he called Snowball, the name of the pet Henry drowned as a boy.
A homeless man, Keys, admits withdrawing cash with Libby’s card for a young man and buying him zip ties, rope, duct tape and a torch. Libby’s mother, psychiatrist Gretchen Blandon, treated Henry at Hesland and admits she sometimes shared personal details with patients. At the Mesner home the squad finds Tom, Holly and five-year-old Arlo dead, killed the morning before Libby’s attack, and the gun safe empty. Ruby, staying with a friend in Oyster Bay, is safe. Dr. Mackie concedes that Henry fooled her whole staff. A fellow patient, Connor Jackson, points to his sister, Cora, Henry’s girlfriend, whose shared photo account shows Henry stalking Libby, Jesse and, that morning, Ruby.
At the Oyster Bay house the detectives find Megan Davis unconscious and rescue her daughter, Charlotte, who says Henry has taken Ruby for “a ride.” The squad tracks the car to a closed amusement park, where Rollins finds Henry holding a gun to Ruby in a house of mirrors. He sends Ruby out with the unloaded gun but keeps Rollins talking, describing a beach outing at six when a friend and the boy’s mother drowned and he floated safely away. As Nassau ESU prepares to storm in, Rollins offers to protect him, and he walks out in handcuffs.
After examining Henry, Dr. Peter Lindstrom testifies that he is competent to stand trial, and the judge agrees. Defense lawyer April Andrews announces an insanity plea, and Henry attacks Carisi in court, stabbing him in the ear.
Spoiler, the ending: Henry is remanded and medicated until he is fit for trial. Carisi’s eardrum is spared. Rollins visits the sedated Henry and tells him she lied when she said she did not want him dead, warning that she will kill him herself if he ever goes after Carisi or her family.
