Summary
“Probability of Doom” opens with Benson telling her therapist, Dr. Heather Lentz, that she keeps hearing the voice of Maria Recinos, a girl she once kept on the phone through the night she was rescued. While Benson attends a police cadet graduation hoping to reconnect with Maria, now an officer, Lisa Miller, who is pregnant, brings SVU a screenshot of child sexual abuse images from the computer of her estranged husband, Wayne. Executing a warrant at Wayne’s Midtown rental, Fin, Velasco and Curry find him cut into pieces on plastic sheeting, and Curry is sick at the scene. Homicide leaves the case to SVU, and Lisa denies any part in it. Wayne’s phone holds photos of a young girl posing in the back seat of his 1959 Plymouth Fury, and Benson and Curry find a tracking device under the car.
A second dismembered man, Gary Turner, a registered sex offender, turns up with another tracker on his car. Dr. Truman finds both men were bludgeoned, then cut apart with a hand saw. The girl in the photos, Nora Boyd, met Wayne on K-Dome, an app for ketamine deliveries that predators now use. Both dead men had messaged one user, whose address leads to the Mott Haven home of James Brock. Only his daughters are there: Nina, 13, and Tori, 21, a building maintenance worker who says their father is on a job in Atlantic City. Nina says Wayne once sat beside her in a park and mentioned the condoms in his pocket.
Brock’s car was towed six weeks earlier with his phone inside, and his employer says he headed home because Tori needed him. Police dogs then find bagged remains by the river that DNA identifies as Brock. Tori is arrested. A jab saw at her workplace and K-Dome messages luring both victims with her sister as bait tie her to the murders. Questioned with her lawyer, she says all three men deserved to die and that she liked it. She describes her father taking her into his bed every night from age eight, after their mother died, and later leading him back to that bed whenever he reached for Nina’s door. She killed Wayne and Gary, she says, to make the world safe.
Spoiler, the ending: Tori faces a long prison term for three murders, and Nina learns that her father is not coming home and that her grandmother Bonnie is coming from Texas to care for her. Over drinks, Fin tells Benson that her fixation on Tori and Maria comes down to fear of what she will find if she looks Maria up. The episode ends as Benson knocks on Maria’s door and is invited inside.
Why it stands out
- Benson revisits Maria Recinos, the girl she rescued in the season 7 episode “911.”
- Dani Montalvo plays the grown Maria; in “911” the role was played by Rachel Diaz-Stand, with Jeanine Monterroza as her voice.
