Summary
“Let Me Bring Pardon” returns to Ellie Hughes, the travel influencer left in a coma after her boyfriend, Chris Becker, tried to kill her. Her mother, Laura, has forgiven Chris and is meeting with his mother, Virginia. When Ellie’s doctor reports a complication, Laura tells Benson she is going to be a grandmother. Dr. Shannon Darcy puts the pregnancy at 16 to 18 weeks, so Ellie may have conceived after entering the trauma unit; if Chris is not the father, she was raped while comatose. Laura refuses a fetal DNA test. Benson and Fin visit Chris at Greenhaven, where he wants help winning early parole, and Benson lets him think it is possible. She then reminds Virginia that she would be paying the child support while her son serves 25 years, for a baby that may not be her grandchild.
Chris petitions for the test. Laura begs Benson not to take away her miracle, but Judge Roberta Martinez grants the petition over the objection of Ellie’s lawyer, and the result shows Chris is not the father. Fin and Curry break the news to Chris and warn him to stop calling Laura; afterward Curry, formerly of IAB, tells Fin she knows Benson herself was conceived in a rape. Trauma administrator Sheila Turner supplies 115 men who worked on the unit during Ellie’s month there. None matches, and neither do Ellie’s male visitors. The chief of neurosurgery, Dr. Isaac Haimes, brushes off the detectives, but when Benson swabs him he explains more than a dozen visits as curiosity about whether Ellie could respond, and he mentions a youth pastor who often prayed with Laura. Laura says Caleb Hartwell could have been alone with Ellie only once, while she spent two hours in the chapel with a couple whose daughter had just been taken off life support. Hospital video shows him entering Ellie’s room, closing the blinds and leaving 15 minutes later.
At home with his wife and four-month-old son, Hartwell tells Bruno and Silva he only prayed with Ellie and puts off giving DNA. Laura never let him into the room, so he is arrested for criminal trespass after slipping out of a sermon on forgiveness. Questioned with church counsel, he claims he asked Ellie to squeeze his hand once if she wanted a baby and she did. Benson promises he will spend the rest of his life in a cell.
Spoiler, the ending: His DNA matches the baby, and Carisi arraigns him and expects an indictment. Benson leaves any decision about the pregnancy to Laura. At Ellie’s bedside, she tells her that she understands the burden her child will carry because she carries it too, and that Laura loves her unconditionally.
Why it stands out
- A sequel to “Rorschach,” earlier in the season, the case in which Ellie Hughes was found bludgeoned and Chris Becker stabbed at a campground.
- Jama Williamson and Graham Patrick Martin return as Laura Hughes and Chris Becker.
- Benson’s own origins come to the fore: Curry reveals she knows Benson is the child of a rape, and Benson tells Ellie she carries the same burden as Ellie’s baby.
