Summary

“Fidelis ad mortem” begins when Curry’s teenage son, Gabe, buys old cassettes at a thrift store and finds one holding a woman’s pleas during what sounds like a rape. An audio expert recovers a date, October 2, 1999, and a West 24th Street address, and finds the tape was deliberately erased. The tape came from a West 46th Street building being demolished, whose basement holds a woman’s remains. Missing-persons records point to Tameka Davis, 24, who lived at the taped address and vanished days after the recording. Fin, back part-time, takes Rollins to a retired detective, who says the block was dealer Miles Gibbs’s territory. Tameka’s mother, Tiffany, and her son, Jaden, identify her voice on the tape.

Gibbs, in prison, denies involvement and points to dirty cops. The squad learns that a 29th Precinct undercover team bugged Tameka’s apartment, that tape 56 is the only one missing, and that Tameka was the team’s informant. Of its four detectives, Paul Holliday is dead, Thomas Ahern and Jerry Kuenzel retired, and Leo Eichmeier is a DA investigator Carisi knows. The medical examiner finds that Tameka was strangled and struck on the head, and that the bag also held parts of a man. Jaden recalls Kuenzel urging his mother to leave. Kuenzel’s former partner, Letitia Bixby, tells Bruno and Griffin he left for a cabin with police friends 25 years ago and never returned; DNA from his old uniform matches the second body.

Ahern brushes off Curry and Rollins. Griffin introduces himself to Eichmeier as Jimmy Griffin’s son and tells him SVU is looking at the Gibbs case; Eichmeier then arranges with Ahern to clean up his cabin in Roscoe, where police catch them and find the rest of Kuenzel. Eichmeier taunts Griffin that his father was not clean. Ahern confesses that Eichmeier, Tameka’s handler, was fixated on her and came back saying he had to kill her; the others disposed of her through a Westies contact, and Eichmeier shot Kuenzel at the cabin for fear he would talk. Under pressure from Tynan, prosecutors give Ahern five years, and he testifies, but the defense shows that Ahern was the one tied to the Westies. A promise of support at his parole hearing wins Gibbs’s help; he reveals that Eichmeier bragged about Tameka and that the FBI bugged his own home.

Spoiler, the ending: Gibbs testifies, and Eichmeier is found guilty on all counts. Fin says he is not back full-time yet, and Benson bristles when Carisi offers him a job in the DA’s office. At a diner, Tynan tells Griffin his father was a good cop in a different era and says she may need him to look into some old cases for her.
