Summary

“Prodigy” opens in Riverside Park, where officers chasing a deaf burglar, Scotty Wells, come upon a stabbed man and a naked woman whose head and hands have been removed, the two posed as if having sex. Wells has no blood on him and his bag holds only loot from a houseboat, so he is handed to burglary detectives. A pacemaker’s records identify the man as Ed Boggs, whose wife says he worked nights at a reclamation plant and had stopped drinking.

A bartender and a drinking buddy, Vinnie, reveal that Boggs had been fired by a female boss two weeks earlier and was hiding it from his wife. Vinnie says Boggs went into the park to relieve himself, and the scene suggests he was slammed into a tree from behind after stumbling on the attack, with the posing and lipstick staged. A hand found in a Brooklyn sewer gives a thumbprint identifying the woman as Pam Tilden, an agent of Manhattan’s animal-cruelty police, the MFPCA.

Among Tilden’s cases, the detectives focus on Harry Baker, a gifted teenager prosecuted at fifteen for setting a cat on fire and suspected of killing other animals, including the dog of a girl who turned him down. A classmate leads them to Harry’s private burial ground of animal skulls in Central Park. In interrogation Harry lectures on serial killers and, speaking hypothetically, mentions a rock, a detail never made public, and he is booked.

Phone records then show Tilden’s last call came from a kennel phone at her agency, where dog walker Joe Poletti turns out to be a paroled serial rapist. He claims he was in Atlantic City and that his van was stolen, and Harry is released, though Stabler warns him he will be watching. Lacking evidence for murder, Cabot charges Poletti with obscenity over violent rape stories he mailed to fellow sex offenders, and a jury convicts him of the misdemeanor, buying the squad up to a year.

Spoiler, the ending: When Poletti’s van turns up, soil, paint and chemical traces lead to a site near a chemical plant in Toms River, New Jersey. Divers are about to give up when searchers turn up a small dog-shaped earring made for Tilden’s fifth year on the job. It carries her DNA and a partial match to Poletti’s thumbprint, and he is told to expect about 25 more years. No murder trial is shown.
