Summary
“Surveillance” opens when cellist Cassie Germaine of the Manhattan Symphony is ambushed in her apartment minutes after her boyfriend, Kevin Wilson, drops her off. The attacker knocks her out, shreds her dress, cuts off her hair and writes an insult on her chest; the rape kit is inconclusive. A sweep with TARU technician Ruben Morales turns up four tiny wireless cameras in her living room, bedroom and bathroom. Kevin points to conductor Robert Prescott, who owns the apartment, and Prescott’s former lover, violinist Valerie Baxter, says she once found a hidden camera and a shelf of tapes labeled with women’s names in his closet.
The cameras were bought online with a dead man’s credit card and shipped to a mail drop near both Cassie’s home and Prescott’s penthouse. Cabot allows a warrant limited to video gear, and among three dozen tapes the squad finds one of Cassie with Prescott. Cassie admits the affair, says he threatened to circulate the tape if she quit, and describes flowers signed “All my love, Me” and hang-up calls the moment she gets home. Prescott says he spent the night of the attack with a woman whose tape proves it. A message apparently written in blood turns up in Cassie’s cello, and Huang suggests an erotomanic stranger. A forged work order under the name of security technician Ray Campbell, whose uniform was stolen from his truck, leads Munch and Fin to a basement receiver streaming the cameras to a website with a single visitor, Terry Willard.
Terry’s landlady, Aimee Slocum, calls him her boyfriend. His online journal shows he has followed Cassie since college, served time for credit card fraud and bought her Social Security number to locate her. Cassie dedicates her debut concert to him as bait, facial recognition cameras flag several wrong men, a dead rat appears outside her dressing room, and Terry is finally caught in the crowd. He describes a romance Cassie knows nothing about and denies hurting her, and Cabot says the law allows little more than trespassing and possibly burglary. Aimee posts his bail, and Cassie is shot twice in the back.
Spoiler, the ending: Cassie survives surgery. Terry is traced to an Internet cafe but slips away, and the detectives tail Aimee to a Spanish Harlem hotel, where they find her alone; Terry is gone. Aimee admits she attacked Cassie, cut her hair and shot her, saying she had warned Cassie to leave Terry alone and had planned to take him home to Oklahoma. Terry’s whereabouts are not resolved on screen.
