Summary
“Silence” opens in St. Martha’s Church, where Father Michael Sweeney finds a body: a teenage boy dressed as a woman, killed by a blow to the head, laid out with an altar cloth, candles and a rosary beside scorched confessionals carved with the Latin word Peccavisti. Sister Peg names him as Jamie Doyle, a 16-year-old runaway saving for a sex change, and says Father Michael leaves the church open for sex workers when it is cold. DNA leads to paroled arsonist Gus Yoder, who admits picking Jamie up for sex but says he left him alive.
Huang says Yoder’s fear of dirt rules him out and that Peccavisti means “you have sinned,” not “I have sinned” as Father Michael claimed, making the scene an attack on the priest. Father Michael abruptly left a Hoboken Catholic school in 1996; a Hoboken detective, Jimmy Moresco, says the church paid off four boys’ families before he could build a case. Of those boys, youth center director Ben Campion denies the priest abused him, Todd Ramsay cites his confidentiality agreement, and Bobby Douglas, a would-be seminarian found dressed as a priest at a shelter, says Father Michael ruined his life.
Bobby’s mother recalls Father Michael visiting at 3 a.m. the night of the fire, and a search finds Jamie’s purse and a bloody flashlight in Bobby’s room. Bobby admits striking Jamie when the teen surprised him setting the fire. Cabot offers manslaughter with five years in a psychiatric center, and Bobby describes being molested at 14 by Father Michael in a basement room the priest called the Lair. Bishop Mallinson defends the priest, but a rectory search yields a 2001 aversion-therapy tape in which Father Michael admits urges toward young teenage boys. A second accuser, Darius Retafian, falls apart when the defense shows his story clashes with Father Michael’s black-and-white TV, that he was abused by a different priest, and that his mother already settled.
Bobby is then stabbed to death by a cellmate. Pressed by Stabler, Father Michael falsely confesses, cannot describe the Lair, and admits he is shielding another priest who confessed to him. Judge Ruth Linden grants Cabot a racketeering subpoena for diocese records, which show the 1996 payoffs and quarterly checks to Bobby’s mother signed by Mallinson, who taught Latin at the school that year.
Spoiler, the ending: Father Michael first refuses to break the seal of confession, but later joins Stabler in confronting Mallinson about what the bishop confessed in 1996. Mallinson warns Father Michael he will be thrown out of the priesthood and is risking his soul; Father Michael answers that he believes he is saving it, and Mallinson says he could not help himself. No arrest or trial is shown.
