Summary
“Soulless” begins in a hospital, where a teenage girl brought in drunk by a private ambulance reports a rape and then tells an exhausted Benson that nothing happened. Soon after, a man in a hat and dark glasses punches a billing clerk and drags the girl out to a car. A hand stamp leads to the Air Bar, where she got in on the lost license of heiress Jenna Sterling. Rapper Bone Kracker steers the detectives to Jenna’s younger sister, Vienna, a high school senior, who identifies the girl as Chloe Dutton, a 15-year-old ninth-grader whose divorced parents each assumed she was with the other.
Chloe is found in the Hudson River, but the medical examiner says she drowned in toilet water. A classmate, Bernie Thorkle (called Bertram in the episode), saw her ride off in a Jaguar rented by Oklahoma oilman Zane Stark, who has an alibi, and the rape kit shows four attackers. Hospital phone records link Chloe’s call to Vienna and a burst of calls among Vienna’s friends Andrew Kenworthy, Davis Harrington and Seth Wolfford III. When Seth leaves for an internship near Washington, Virginia police, who can take DNA on arrest, pick him up on a robbery pretext, and his DNA matches. Davis and Andrew lead to a fourth man, “Max Van Horn,” really Mitch Wilkens, a hotel valet who borrows guests’ cars to pass as rich. Mitch admits the rape but points to Seth for the murder, his mother backs his alibi, and Seth’s home yields the disguise and blood traces.
While Seth is on trial, Linda Leggatt tells the detectives that Mitch is really Eric Wayne Proctor, who at 10 sexually abused and killed her three-year-old son, Tommy, in New Hampshire and was freed at 19 with his juvenile record expunged. Mitch mocks the detectives in interrogation. His mother, Sally Wilkens, insists he is cured, until Benson spots the bracelet Chloe wore when she was taken on Sally’s wrist.
Spoiler, the ending: On the stand, Sally testifies that Mitch gave her the bracelet the day after Chloe’s murder and asked her to lie for him, and she warns the jury he will kill again. Mitch is convicted of kidnapping and first-degree murder. Told that Emily Owens, the elderly owner of the brownstone where he lived, cannot be found, he refuses to say where she is.
