Summary
“Loss” opens when a dog walker’s pet finds a young woman’s body in a trash pile, naked except for a fur coat. Livia Tellez was raped and beaten to death, and her tongue was cut out. Her coat is dusted with cocaine and a leg wound holds fiberglass slivers, yet her identity reaches back only to 2001. A medal of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá points to Colombia and a Queens parish, and papers in a storage unit she rented, filed under her real name, Livia Sandoval, show she was an NYPD officer lent to the Drug Enforcement Administration for undercover work.
DEA agents Jack Hammond and Tim Donovan, who have been tailing the detectives, agree to let SVU investigate only on condition that her police work stays secret, even from Cabot. A narcotics contact steers Fin and Munch to dealer Felix Santos, who names Rafael Zapata Gaviria, a lieutenant of cartel chief Cesar Velez, as a lover Livia mocked in front of his friends. Donovan, her handler, then tells Benson and Stabler that Zapata’s yacht has a fiberglass hull, and a bleach-soaked mattress aboard leads to Zapata’s arrest. Judge Lena Petrovsky sets bail at $5 million, then orders Cabot to produce the confidential informant. Donovan refuses, and in a tense plea meeting Cabot warns Zapata against intimidating the informant; a federal judge then bars the state from subpoenaing Donovan.
A recorded prison call reveals that Velez’s men know Cabot’s address, her jogging route and her mother’s home. Donovan promises to testify openly to end the threat but dies in a car bomb. Cabot refuses to step aside, and Cragen gives her his old revolver, but District Attorney Arthur Branch drops the case. As the charges are dismissed, federal marshals arrest Zapata for Donovan’s murder, and he is expected to turn on Velez.
Spoiler, the ending: Heading home late with Benson and Stabler, Cabot is hit by gunfire and appears to die in Benson’s arms. Zapata is later found dead in a holding cell. Hammond calls the two detectives to a remote meeting, where Cabot is alive: her death has been faked, she is going into witness protection until Velez is dealt with, and they must attend her funeral the next day.
Why it stands out
- Stephanie March leaves the regular cast with this episode; Cabot’s faked death and move into witness protection left room for her to come back, and she returns in Season 6’s “Ghost.”
- Mitch Pileggi, Walter Skinner on The X-Files, plays DEA agent Jack Hammond, the first of his two appearances in the role.
- Fred Dalton Thompson’s DA Arthur Branch, from Law & Order, makes the call to drop the case.
