Summary
“Coerced” opens on the morning five-year-old Adam Forbes is discovered missing from his bed, his window screen slit. His mother, Carolyn, blames her ex-husband, Peter, who is suing for sole custody, but his alibi holds. CSU technician Burt Trevor shows the screen had been refitted backwards after a cleaning, so it was cut from the fire escape, where a stranger left prints.
A deliveryman saw a man carrying a boy in pajamas near a grocery three blocks away. Inside, the owner, Lester Hale, lies stabbed to death and assistant manager Emilio Vasquez is badly hurt. In the basement where a worker named Kevin sleeps, detectives find photos of Adam labeled “Tate.” Vasquez says Kevin Walker, a former accounting partner who lost his job and family, insisted the boy was his son. Benson spots Walker near a dumpster, and he is taken in, raving about the “cacistis,” a secret police only he can hear.
Dr. George Huang says Walker has paranoid schizophrenia and needs medication before he can help. After Stabler is alone with him, Walker hurls a chair and wrecks the room, and Huang sedates him. Drifting off, Walker murmurs about a man in a big white hat, which leads Stabler and Benson to a bakery sign on his boyhood street in the Bronx. They find Adam tied up but alive in a condemned building.
Walker later tells Huang that Stabler said the cacistis would take his son and, unless he talked, kill him. Huang accuses Stabler of provoking the outburst to force the sedation, and Cragen warns that a trial could end Stabler’s usefulness as a witness. Cragen asks ADA Casey Novak to plead the case out without saying why, and Walker is found not responsible by reason of mental disease. In court he shouts that “they” killed someone named Martha, and Novak demands an explanation.
Walker’s wife, Julia, says he had lived at Jackson Manor, an adult home in Queens that ran out of his medication. Huang identifies Martha Davis, 45, his neighbor there, whose death was recorded as suicide. Walker says staff refused her air conditioning in a heat wave unless she paid extra; when he called them killers, his medication stopped and he was turned out. Records show the home still logging his doses a year later, and owner Randall Haber is arrested for fraud.
Spoiler, the ending: An exhumation shows Martha died of heatstroke, and Novak charges Haber with her death and Hale’s, arguing that cutting off Walker’s medication led to the stabbing. With Walker ready to testify that Haber had an aide cut Martha’s wrists, Haber takes two concurrent counts of first-degree manslaughter and 15 years. Julia brings Tate to see his father, now back on medication.
