Summary
“Charisma” opens with 12-year-old Melanie arriving at a hospital alone, about 30 weeks pregnant and scarred from an earlier delivery. She names the father as Abraham, her husband. Benson goes to his house on West 120th Street, where several children are inside; Abraham fires on her and a standoff follows. When shots ring out, the entry team storms in to find the children dead and Abraham gone through an old tunnel. His fingerprints identify him as Eugene Hoff, a con man arrested in the 1980s for check forgery and fraud, who leads the Church of Wisdom and Sight.
Cragen orders every detective to see a psychologist. After his session Stabler is put on sick leave and told to give up his gun, and Benson partners with Munch. A pastor who once employed Hoff and a Queens couple who left the group describe a magnetic, paranoid leader who stockpiled weapons, separated married couples and singled out young girls. An anonymous call asking whether a nine-year-old boy died is traced to Melanie’s hospital, and the women of the group are found and refuse to give their names. Warner then shows that the oldest victim, about 20, shot the others and herself, and that Abraham fathered every dead child but her, including a toddler born to a 16-year-old who was also his daughter. Melanie, meanwhile, leaves the hospital with Abraham of her own will.
Benson identifies Melanie’s mother, who calls herself Sarah, by her voice and berates her for allowing the abuse. Numbers in Sarah’s pocket lead to emptied bank accounts built on counterfeit payroll checks and to Reg, a teller who helped Hoff, and a sting at the bank ends in Hoff’s arrest. He refuses to reveal where Melanie is, and without proof of the dead girls’ ages Novak needs Melanie to testify. A last account in the name of John Cramer, missing for ten years with his wife and two-year-old daughter, Melanie, explains the motive: the girl’s trust fund, about $2 million, pays out when she turns 21 or has a baby. Inside a wall of the house, the detectives find Cramer’s body with a gunshot wound to the back of the skull.
Spoiler, the ending: Shown her husband’s remains, Sarah reveals a warehouse up north where Abraham, out on bail after losing his police tail, has taken Melanie. There Melanie shoots Officer Zermeño. Benson stays with the armed girl, telling her Abraham killed her father for money, while Abraham urges her to shoot Benson. When he declares himself greater than God, Melanie lowers the gun and tells Benson that nobody is.
Why it stands out
- Stabler is placed on sick leave after a mandatory psychological session, so Benson works the case with Munch.
- Jeff Kober plays the cult leader, credited both as Abraham and under his real name, Eugene Hoff.
