Summary

“Class” begins when a prostitute named Vegas interrupts a man hiding a young woman’s body under a grate on her stroll. The victim, strangled around midnight, has red paint under her nails and a Hudson University ID: Caroline Pereira, 20, a small-town student on financial aid. Her phone holds a dim picture taken at 12:07 a.m. The bursar says she quit her cafeteria job and paid $15,000 in cash, and her wealthy roommate, Gloria Kulhane, is wearing a diamond ring that turns out to be Caroline’s. Caroline’s childhood friend Adam Halder tells detectives she sold term papers.

A plagiarism inquiry leads to students who bought from her, among them Gloria, who says Caroline took the ring from a rich, famous man. A jeweler known as Diamond Dov traces it to football player Roddy Franklin, who is on league probation for gambling. Casino video shows Caroline winning the ring from him at an Atlantic City poker table. Franklin says she became a regular at an underground game in the garment district, fell more than $150,000 into debt to the house and was threatened by its operator, Riley. Detectives raid the game and match the paint to a wall there, but Riley is Secret Service agent Doug Kersten, deep in a long sting. He admits moving her body to protect the operation and says Caroline was barred from an online poker site for cheating.

Site records show a player called Jack King online whenever she was, and an invitation sent through Kersten draws him to a game: it is Adam. He tells Stabler that he and Caroline ran a poker partnership, that her losses left him liable for half the debt and threatened his new life among rich classmates, and that he strangled her. Stabler asks Novak to consider a plea. Defense attorney Walter Camp enters an insanity plea based on gambling addiction. Stabler tells Novak that as a young bartender he nearly killed a rich youth with a bottle and his father had the arrest quietly dropped, and he urges her to focus on Adam’s rage.

Spoiler, the ending: On the stand, Adam recalls the night in detail until the strangling itself, which he calls a blur. Novak gets him to admit that Caroline wore the ring when she died and that Gloria is his girlfriend. The flash in Caroline’s photo proves to be light off the ring, exposing Gloria’s story about finding it on a dresser. Called by Novak, Gloria testifies that Adam said he would silence Caroline if he had to. The jury convicts Adam of second-degree murder, and Novak tells Gloria she faces up to 15 years for possessing the stolen ring.
