Summary
“Web” begins at a school safety talk, where eight-year-old Jake Winnock lets slip that someone touches him but says he is not allowed to tell who. His mother explains that her ex-husband, Gregory Hensal, molested Jake’s older brother, Teddy, years earlier, served seven years of a ten-year sentence and has since won supervised visits with Jake. Huang gets little from either boy. Hensal, who takes a weekly polygraph under a parole pilot program, passes the questions about touching Jake, but his sister admits she left them alone for a few minutes.
Warner finds saliva on Jake, and the abuser’s mitochondrial DNA matches Jake’s exactly, which points to someone with the same mother: Teddy. At school Teddy attacks Gordy Richards, a student journalist who has plastered explicit pictures of him in a hallway. Gordy followed a link on Teddy’s profile page to a website Teddy runs himself, selling photos and live webcam shows to more than a thousand paying subscribers. Jake says his brother had him act in a “pretending movie” for online friends who send presents. With defense attorney Trevor Langan beside him, Teddy refuses to name his customers, and Stabler lets him go home overnight at his mother’s urging.
Federal prosecutor Donna Geysen then announces a child pornography indictment and demands Teddy that night, but when Stabler goes to bring him in, Teddy is gone. TARU technician Ruben Morales, who kept the site’s message board running despite Cragen’s order to shut it down, spots posts promising Teddy help. Posing online as a 15-year-old, Morales lures one subscriber, a teacher named Ralph Zessner, to a meeting with Fin, and Zessner gives up the apartment where Teddy filmed his shows. Teddy’s last broadcast there shows a man arriving with his own key, and the lease was signed under a stolen identity. Morales explains that his own nephew was raped by a man he met online.
Benson, now in Computer Crimes, uses new tracing software to link the “help is on the way” post to Dr. Lucas, a physician at Mercy Hospital, who refuses to talk. Benson walks in on Morales beating Lucas in the interrogation room and orders him out. The detectives then release Lucas and watch his account as he contacts another subscriber, whose reply is traced to an apartment in Washington Heights.
Spoiler, the ending: Police find Teddy there alive, and he is taken to the hospital, where he admits he believed the men were his friends and apologizes to his mother. Geysen grants him immunity in exchange for testimony against the pedophiles, with treatment at a residential facility instead of jail. Cragen tells Benson she was right to report Morales, and the closing exchange signals her return to SVU.
