Summary
“Burned” begins when Valerie Sennet reports that her estranged husband, Miles, a recovering alcoholic and drug user, got into her apartment and raped her the night after a supervised visit with their 12-year-old daughter, Tessa. Valerie has moved several times to keep her address from him and wants Tessa left out of the case. Judge Harrison of Family Court, who refused to renew her protection order, tells the detectives that rape claims are a common weapon in divorces. Stabler, whose own marriage is ending, doubts Valerie, while Benson believes her. After the detectives question Tessa against her mother’s wishes, Valerie withdraws the complaint, and Miles, who says no sex took place, is let go.
Hairs found in several rooms of the apartment match Miles, and with Novak’s approval Valerie is arrested for filing a false report, after which she again says she was raped. Huang talks with Tessa, who says her father never hit anyone and that she gave him no key, but she had told him she overheard her mother speaking with a recruiter in Dallas and feared another move. A search of Miles’s apartment turns up a manual for a GPS tracker, and the device is found under the car of Ms. Jenner, the social worker who supervises the visits. Arrested, Miles admits going to the apartment, dragging Valerie out of the shower and shaking her, but denies rape. Huang sees no history of abuse in the family, and Cragen has Stabler quietly check Valerie’s background. Kathy Stabler, meanwhile, asks Benson to persuade Elliot to sign their divorce papers. A neighbor recalls a late visitor named Phillip from Valerie’s lawyer’s office.
At the arraignment the judge sets bail at $500,000, far above the $100,000 Novak asks for, but Miles’s parents put up their home. Once free, he soaks Valerie with gasoline on the street, sets her alight and takes Tessa. In a dying declaration Valerie names him, and Stabler blames himself for not seeing the danger. In Central Park, Miles tells Tessa he has killed her mother and pushes her away, and officers bring him down with plastic bullets and take him into custody.
Spoiler, the ending: In the burn unit, barely conscious, Valerie repeats that Miles raped her. Phillip Anderson (called Phillip Anders in the episode), an investigator for her divorce lawyer, then tells Benson he had protected sex with Valerie on the day of the alleged attack, which accounts for the evidence of intercourse. Valerie dies soon afterward, and Benson tells Stabler she was not raped. Stabler says he has signed his divorce papers, and the partners patch things up over a late meal.
Why it stands out
- Eriq La Salle directs the episode, which reunites guest star Michael Michele with La Salle, Mariska Hargitay and executive producer Neal Baer, all of whom she worked with on ER.
- Benson, back at work for about a month, learns from Kathy Stabler that Det. Dani Beck has transferred back to her old unit, and Stabler signs his divorce papers.
