Summary
“Infiltrated” opens in a Manhattan courtroom, where Stabler testifies against Peter Lophus, accused of a savage rape caught on video. Defense attorney Roger Kressler points out that the key DNA came from chewing gum found by Benson, who had arrested Lophus years before, and calls her as a witness. Novak cannot produce her: Benson has spent five weeks on a classified FBI assignment. In Oregon, posing as an activist named Persephone James, she wakes in a prison ward after Deputy Jimmy Ibold clubs her at a logging protest, and she is charged with assaulting him, while fellow activists Hope and T-Bone are also in custody.
Sheriff Bartley then questions her about Carl Dunford, an employee of Fitzmore Pharmaceuticals, which her group had picketed for dumping estrogen-laced waste into a river. Dunford was pulled from that river stabbed many times and castrated. Her case agent, FBI Agent Dean Porter, wants the group tied to a string of eco-terror arsons and orders her to drop anything outside it, especially after a threatening email to Fitzmore staff surfaces. Benson pursues the sex-crime angle on her own. Dunford’s ex-wife, Debra Hartnell, caught hiding children’s videos and clothing catalogs from his house, finally admits she left him eight years earlier after finding him with their 12-year-old babysitter. That girl, Kristy Shutt, now a young mother, describes a hidden room beneath his garage, and Benson breaks in to find it, with what looks like the murder weapon.
In New York, the victim, Chelsea Arndale, says she will kill herself if Lophus walks; Novak wins a one-week delay, and Stabler presses Huang to reach Benson through the bureau. Benson phones the squad once but hangs up before Stabler can come on the line. Prints in the hidden room belong to Britney Dunlap, who vanished at age 10 seven years earlier. Bartley, who has worked out that Benson is a cop, and Porter shut down her operation: the group was never involved in the arsons, and the real suspect has been caught in Montreal. Benson talks Porter into letting her help, and a trucker’s tip leads them to a childhood fort in the woods near Britney’s old home in Butteville.
Spoiler, the ending: Britney, hiding in the fort, tells Benson that she killed Dunford when he insisted she find a younger girl to take her place, then wrapped his body in a tarp and drove it to the river. She still says she loved him; Benson tells her none of it was her fault. The investigators agree no jury would convict her, and she is to receive psychiatric care. Porter belatedly passes on a message from Huang, and Benson flies home, reaching the courthouse in time to testify for Chelsea.
