Summary

“Streetwise” begins when paintball players in Central Park stumble on the body of a young woman who was beaten to death; one expensive earring has been ripped from her ear and the other dropped nearby. Warner finds alcohol in her blood and black paint flecked with rust in the head wound, and an old drunk-driving arrest puts the victim in the system as debutante Shelby Crawford, who slipped out of a ball at the Plaza across the street. Her boyfriend, Doug Walshen, has been sleeping with her friend Anna, while Shelby was secretly seeing Tony, a musician from a public school. A video message Shelby left Tony shows her drinking in the park with Anna, and the detectives set Doug and Anna against each other until Tony’s DNA accounts for the semen and the earring surfaces at a pawnshop.

The seller is Josie, an underfed 11-year-old who says her father sent her. Paige Beddles, who teaches writing at a youth shelter, explains that Josie belongs to Phalanx, a “street family” of homeless kids run by Cole Roderick and Cassidy Cornell as father and mother. Benson and Stabler catch Josie at the group’s camp, and after they eat a meal in front of the starving girl, she says Cole struck Shelby with a padlock on a chain because Cassidy heard Shelby insult him. Josie is left overnight at the shelter, where Cole kills Paige and takes Josie; the girl is later found in a manhole, tortured to death. Her short stories, written as fables about lions and crows, turn out to record the family’s crimes.

Cassidy comes in and, for a ticket to San Francisco, tells the detectives where Cole buried three earlier victims: a homeless man, a would-be rival, Byrnesy Ross, and Cole’s former partner, Larissa Rhed. Cole is arrested in a Fort Greene warehouse and defends his code of loyalty, Cassidy testifies against him, and he receives 25 years for each killing, to run consecutively. Then a Park Avenue couple, the Braidwells, spot Cassidy in a newspaper photo and identify her as their runaway daughter, Helen, a former classmate of Shelby’s. The detectives conclude that Shelby recognized her in the park and that Helen invented the insult so Cole would silence her.

Spoiler, the ending: Novak charges Helen with second-degree manslaughter on the theory that a lie meant to provoke a killing makes the liar responsible for it. Cole at first refuses to testify against her, but after hearing how she described him at his own trial, he tells the jury that she said Shelby had disrespected him and that he would not be a real man unless he acted. The jury convicts Helen of manslaughter.
