Summary

“Fight” opens when two Boy Scouts on a GPS scavenger hunt find 17-year-old Julie Donovan of Long Island dead in a park. She was beaten and strangled, and a cap marked with a “C” and her smashed phone lie nearby. Her father, Terry, who raised her alone, says she had taken up hip-hop and dating Black men. Semen in her body belongs to mixed martial arts champion Mike Kona, and Lake reveals that he once fought as an amateur. The detectives arrest Kona after a title fight. His fiancée, Traci Bell, whose earlier rape complaint against him was dropped, hands over hidden-camera video of Julie with him, and Kona admits to sex and a slap. But a lawyer for his fight league produces gym records and video that clear him of the killing. As Kona leaves, Terry shoots him dead.

DNA on the cap belongs to Jadon Odami, and video from Julie’s phone shows her dancing with Jadon and his brother, Ezra, at a Hudson University fraternity party. The brothers run, and the dean expels them. Their teacher from a jail school calls them his best students, and their files show a heroin-addicted mother, Janelle, and 19 foster homes, and Lake’s sympathy for them sparks a squad-room argument. After Janelle is arrested, Jadon surrenders and confesses in exchange for her release, then fires his lawyer and pleads guilty, describing a robbery gone wrong. His juvenile record shows Ezra was his partner in every past crime. The caps tie the brothers to the Corner Hustlers, a gang whose founder, James “Jimmy Mac” McDonnell, makes recruits rape girls. During a stakeout Ezra fires at McDonnell, who hides in a garbage truck and is crushed. Ezra says McDonnell framed his brother after the boys refused to sell drugs at college, but Cragen tells Lake the case is closed.

Spoiler, the ending: Lake, who admits to a colleague that he grew up in foster care, spots a pregnant woman photographing Julie in the party video. At Rikers he tells Jadon how a cousin once took the blame for him, and Jadon admits he confessed because he believed Ezra was guilty. Janelle, newly sober, names the photographer as Latrice Munez, McDonnell’s top prostitute. Latrice says McDonnell had recruited Julie into prostitution and planned for her to have sex with both brothers and then accuse them of rape so he could extort their scholarship money; when Julie refused, he beat her. Novak agrees to let Jadon withdraw his plea and drops the attempted murder charge against Ezra, and the gun charge collapses when the weapon goes missing. The dean readmits the brothers, who head out to Red Lobster to celebrate.
