Summary
The Investigation
“Swept Away” follows the death of Wes Tatum, 20, a cast member of the reality series Deal With It, who goes off the roof of the loft where seven young people live on camera. Producers Corey and Melanie Kaufman whisk the cast away and later bar them from speaking without lawyers. Housemate Jeremy admits he quarreled with Tatum over a missing video camera, which turns up with Tatum’s skateboarding friend Aaron, who has an alibi. Interview tapes show producers goading the cast with insults Tatum supposedly made.
A driver’s shooting schedule shows that camera operator Gavin left for Montreal right after the death. Faced with a material witness order, Gavin says Paul Wyler confronted Tatum on the roof, Tatum slapped him, and Tatum went over the edge as Gavin filmed. The tape went to post-production and has vanished. Housemate Amber helps police find Wyler, who is arrested for murder.
The Trial
Ordered to account for the tape, network lawyer Peter Behrens reveals he filed it as an exhibit in a civil case to avoid incriminating whoever gave it to him. The footage shows Tatum taunting Wyler about letting Amber’s cat out before the struggle. Wyler’s lawyer then reports that Tatum, dying, told Wyler the fight was an act. Gavin’s girlfriend, Clair, says the producers sent him to film it, and the Kaufmans name network vice president Byron Stark, who is arrested.
Wyler testifies to Tatum’s last words, admitted as a dying declaration. Melanie Kaufman says Stark overrode her objections to casting both young men and asked Tatum for a physical clash before February sweeps, with Wyler his first choice. Stark denies it, but McCoy produces his planner, a “Sweeps Dreams” memo and a consultant’s survey in which viewers named Tatum the character they most wanted dead.
Spoiler, the ending: McCoy offers Stark a plea to second-degree manslaughter with two to six years, and his lawyer urges him to take it. News organizations subpoena the rooftop tape, and the closing scene suggests that the footage will be broadcast.
Why it stands out
- Charlie Day appears as cast member Jeremy.
- The missing videotape surfaces in the courthouse basement, filed as a civil exhibit by a lawyer trying to avoid both hiding evidence and incriminating his client.
- The prosecution targets the network executive who staged the confrontation rather than only the young man who pushed the victim.
