Summary
The Investigation
“New York Minute” begins early one morning with trucking-company owner Clayton Stack shot in the head and chest beside his rig, his cash untouched. His widow says he had been waking up screaming for months, and Lester Wilkes, a driver Stack fired, has a grudge and no alibi but no link to the shooting. Stack’s collection of pricey vintage cars and records showing that his own Arizona runs carried almost no freight suggest a side business. The trailer holds blood, waste, claw marks and dozens of sets of prints, and his operations manager admits Stack ferried migrants from Sasabe, Mexico, at $2,000 apiece, and that a cooling-unit failure two months earlier killed the people inside, whose bodies Stack dumped in the desert.
A traffic camera caught a rented white car shadowing the truck, and the renter, Nathaniel Prentiss, belongs to the Countrymen Borderwatch of America, a volunteer group that patrols the Mexican border. After an anonymous call, police recover the murder weapon from a storm drain, and Blanca Alvarez, an undocumented housekeeper who watched a man hide it, picks Prentiss out of a lineup. He denies knowing Stack and asks for a lawyer.
The Trial
Prentiss’s lawyer claims self-defense, and Judge Everett Todd lets jurors hear about the twelve migrants who died in Stack’s truck. A thumbprint on a bullet belongs to someone else. Fellow Countryman Terry Dorn insists Prentiss only meant to persuade Stack to surrender. When a man with a knife goes after Alvarez on the street, police catch him; he sold Dorn the gun and says Dorn paid him to scare Alvarez and knew Stack would die. Dorn signs a cooperation deal and testifies that Prentiss planned the killing, but the defense reveals that Dorn owes Prentiss $50,000, wrecking his credibility.
Alvarez identifies Prentiss in court and is grilled about her immigration status, drawing on a confidential file that was leaked to the defense. Tracing the leak, the prosecutors confront ICE agent Dwight McNary, a Countrymen member, who admits Dorn sabotaged smugglers’ trucks, including Stack’s, and that Stack knew it. Cross-examining Prentiss, McCoy suggests Dorn used him to silence Stack, and he offers a manslaughter plea for testimony against Dorn, which Prentiss refuses.
Spoiler, the ending: Prentiss is convicted of second-degree murder. Dorn turns down a 25-year conspiracy plea and is arrested by U.S. Marshals on an Arizona warrant tied to the sabotage. Alvarez, who held firm through a hostile cross-examination, faces deportation to Oaxaca, and the DA’s office declines to step in, fearing it would look as if her testimony had been bought.
Why it stands out
- The prosecution’s eyewitness is an undocumented housekeeper, and the defense attacks her immigration status using a confidential file, a leak that leads prosecutors to an ICE agent in the border group.
- Over the prosecution’s objection, the judge admits evidence that twelve migrants died in the victim’s trailer.
- The witness who helps convict the killer ends the episode facing deportation.
