Summary

The Investigation

“Challenged” opens with the murder of acoustical engineer Rick Devon, who moved back home after a divorce and is found with his head slammed against a tree in a park known for drug dealing. A key left in the park’s restroom carries the prints of Diego Cardenas, a former gang member who now runs a group home for intellectually disabled adults. Cardenas first says he visited with residents that morning, then claims he came back alone that night looking for a hookup.

Dealers Big Chuck and Momo admit finding the body, and an informant says they are hunting a fleeing witness. Assuming it is Cardenas, detectives race to protect him, but he is found shot dead after sending resident Freddie home from an alley. Freddie cannot recognize faces but recites license plates. Records show Cardenas was cooking dinner when Devon died; the key belongs to resident Pete Haynes (called Harris in the episode), who missed that dinner and whom Cardenas has hidden at a Staten Island state hospital.

Pete says his new friend Rick took him out for Mexican food, and that he left the restroom to find Rick on the ground with a dealer over him. Pete also has a baby picture of himself from Rick. Records reveal that Stanley and Ruth Devon gave Pete up to the state in 1964 and that he was sent to Willowbrook under another surname. Rick had been working to reunite the family, and his paperwork has been taken from a forced drawer in his room.

The Trial

Momo agrees to plead to Cardenas’s murder and implicate Big Chuck, but both deny killing Devon. At a family visit, Matt mentions that Pete drinks soda only from plastic bottles, a detail his oldest brother, Ted, told him; such bottles did not exist when Pete was sent away, so Ted has seen him recently. Pete later recognizes Ted’s voice as the one shouting at Rick before the attack, and Ted, who had been borrowing money from his family, is arrested for second-degree murder.

The Devons then ask Pete to move back home. At trial the defense suggests that another brother, Matt, had the same motives as Ted, and Pete, on the stand, claims he was the one who argued with Rick and pushed him. Sure Pete is lying to shield his family, the prosecutors order his arrest for murder and warn the Devons he faces prison.

Spoiler, the ending: Ruth Devon breaks down, recalling her husband’s reasons for sending Pete away, and refuses to give him up again. Ted then admits he argued with Rick about bringing Pete home, followed him to the park and shoved him hard. He pleads guilty to second-degree manslaughter and is remanded to await sentencing.
