Summary

The Investigation

“Boy on Fire” starts when police find 16-year-old Cesar Ramirez burning in a vacant lot on 115th Street near Madison Avenue, with an empty paint thinner can nearby and his phone gone. Cesar attended Sunrise Academy, a charter school whose students tutor neighborhood children, and a donor posts a $25,000 reward. Moses Dolan, the boy he tutored, says a student from Aaron Burr High once warned Cesar away from a girl named Jolie.

At Aaron Burr, principal Martha Woodside produces Jolie Henderson, who claims she barely knew Cesar. Jay Spivey, the jealous boy, is home with the flu but has heard of a cellphone video of the attack. Confiscated phones yield the clip, which shows a girl in an Aaron Burr pep band sweatshirt. Moses’s older brother, Abel, says he lost his, and Woodside’s sign-in sheet puts Abel and her student helper Edison Treadwell at an after-school cleanup that night. The sheet also shows Cesar signing up on the same nights as Jolie.

A reward tipster who saw Edison with Cesar’s phone turns out to be Moses, who then says in front of his mother that he made it up. Hours after the detectives ask Woodside for Jolie’s address, Jolie is raped by three boys. A search of her family’s apartment turns up the torn, singed band sweatshirt from the video.

The Trial

Mrs. Dolan says Abel was at a night-school class, but his teacher says he dropped it after Woodside changed his failing grade to a pass; grade records for Abel, Edison and dozens of others were altered. Cutter charges Woodside with grand larceny over more than $2 million in funding and a $10,000 bonus tied to the inflated results, but the judge dismisses the charge and leaves the matter to education officials. The prosecutors suspect Woodside unwittingly tipped the boys that police wanted to question Jolie.

Before a grand jury, Woodside denies giving the boys a false alibi and defends her school against the charter schools that draw away its best students. Jolie’s testimony reveals that Abel resented Moses’s tutoring sessions and his growing bond with Cesar. The prosecutors bring Abel in for questioning and ask Woodside to speak with him; she urges him to be truthful, and Abel has Moses tell the police that Abel and his friends killed Cesar.

Spoiler, the ending: Abel’s account implicates the others, and plea deals covering the killing and the rape are being worked out; no trial is shown. Moses gets the reward. Woodside is moved to a desk job in school administration, and the prosecutors lean against charging her with perjury.
