Summary

The Investigation

“Filtered Life” opens in a Manhattan park, where the van of Amanda Larson, a 22-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, with about two million followers for her van-life videos, is found broken into and smeared with blood, one of her shoes nearby. Her last post came from a party in Brooklyn. Vegan blogger Toby Bass claims they parted at a subway platform, until an ATM photo shows Larson using her father’s card across from his apartment at 4:06 a.m. His roommate and former girlfriend, Megan Stanton, admits Larson came home with him; the pair lied to protect a blog built on their being a couple.

The blood belongs to Joseph Denzig, a thief with Larson’s license in his closet, who says he cut himself breaking into the van and watched a man drag her to a blue-and-tan Chevy pickup. The same man appears behind Larson in videos she posted, and a young woman recognizes him from a dating app: Daniel Garrett, who used a dozen aliases and posed as an oncologist to meet Larson, who turned him down after one date. License-plate readers lead to Wharton State Forest in New Jersey, where police catch Garrett with a freshly used shovel, zip ties and an emptied bag of lye. He asks for a lawyer.

The Trial

The prosecutors doubt they can prove Larson is dead, but they are told to go ahead, and Garrett is charged with felony murder. Defense attorney Erica Knight calls the case a publicity stunt; the judge excludes six women Garrett allegedly deceived, two of whom he assaulted, and a beach photo tagged in Cancún appears on Larson’s account. Larson’s mother testifies that her daughter called home every day. Garrett calls his fake profiles a joke, and Price confronts him with his purchases of zip ties, a shovel, a tarp and lye hours after Larson rejected him.

Lisa Element, a high school classmate of Garrett’s with a podcast about the case, breaks into his cousin’s cabin near the forest and finds Larson’s missing shoe. The prosecutors fear jurors will suspect she bought its mate but call her anyway, and Knight casts her as a fame seeker. Knight then offers Larson’s location for a manslaughter plea and 15 years. The Larsons beg for the deal, but it is refused after Price says he can win.

Spoiler, the ending: In closing, Price warns jurors that the defense, like Garrett online, is selling them a false story. The jury finds Garrett guilty. Larson’s remains are still missing, and Maroun doubts her parents would agree that the office made the right call.
