Summary
The Investigation
“Land of Opportunity” opens with investment banker Gavin Stulner berating a homeless man outside a shelter until a young man steps in and leaves Stulner on the sidewalk. That young man, Venezuelan migrant Luis Morales, is found that night shot three times in the back and left on a park bench. Shelter staff say he came north on one of the buses Texas sent to the city and was saving for his own apartment. Stulner says he was at a bar, and a neighbor, Samantha Morris, who drew a gun on Morales over a disputed drywall job, owns a different caliber.
Morales had used Morris’s phone to call journalist Michael Higueres, saying he had seen something connected to a murder. Shelter resident Obie White says the two went looking for day work at a downtown skyscraper site and saw something there, and police dig two bodies out of the concrete foundation. Foreman Randall Tully says two migrant day laborers died when an overloaded materials elevator collapsed, that developer Eric Wise told him to make the problem disappear, and that Wise promised to handle Morales after hearing he had been asking questions. Tully wears a wire to Wise’s home, where Wise denies everything and fires him, but surveillance shows a pistol on Wise’s bodyguard, Ian Belsky, and ballistics match it.
The Trial
Belsky, found with $100,000 in cash, demands ten years in exchange for testifying that Wise paid him to kill Morales, and the deal is made. Defense attorney Sanford Rems counters with records showing Tully withdrew $100,000 from a site slush fund, suggesting the foreman hired Belsky. Maroun then approaches Wise’s housekeeper, Soraya Hamoud, a woman from Beirut, where Maroun’s parents also came from, who is living in the country illegally with her young daughter, Injila. Hamoud overheard Wise congratulating Belsky and warning him not to deposit the cash.
Despite objections that the office is using Hamoud the way Wise used his workers, the prosecutors decide to call her. Before she can testify, immigration agents raid her apartment and detain her and Injila, a tip the prosecutors blame on Wise. Pressed by the prosecution, an immigration official, Paul Garson, agrees to delay her removal hearing until after the trial, and Hamoud testifies about the toast and the duffel bag Belsky carried out of Wise’s home.
Spoiler, the ending: Wise is convicted of first-degree murder. Afterward, word comes that Hamoud’s hearing went ahead the day before despite the promised delay, and she and Injila have already been sent back to Lebanon.
Why it stands out
- Maroun reveals that her parents came from Beirut, the same city as the witness she persuades to testify.
- The guilty verdict is undercut in the final scene, when the prosecution’s key witness is deported despite a promise to wait until the trial was over.
