Summary
The Investigation
“Mammon” opens with Emily Wade, a 27-year-old Hudson graduate student, shot twice in the chest at point-blank range outside her off-campus apartment, with nothing taken. A classmate saw a blue van with a green stripe speeding away. A bartender who blamed Emily for his breakup and her ex-Marine boyfriend, who messaged that he was angry enough to kill her, both have alibis. Raised in foster care, Emily had one close relative, her foster brother, Lonnie Ballard.
Her last day leads to First Harmony church, where Pastor Mike Butler says Emily asked him to push Lonnie to find work. Cosgrove scorns the pastor’s wealth; Shaw replies that prosperity looks different to people who grow up poor and Black. Lonnie, recently laid off, says Emily paid $2,000 of his rent. Cameras outside a pawn shop catch Emily that night, a man in a New York cap nearby and the striped van, registered to ex-con Ruben Grandy, who gave it to the church. It is now driven by vice pastor Henry Sherman, a parolee with a long record. Sherman insists anyone could have used it, but a search turns up a New York cap and blood, and he is arrested for murder.
The Trial
The hunt for a motive finds a $50,000 First Harmony check Sherman deposited the day after the murder, plus calls between him and Pastor Mike around the shooting. Facing a murder-for-hire indictment, Sherman takes a deal for first-degree manslaughter and ten years. He says Pastor Mike had him silence Emily because she threatened to go to the police unless the church returned Lonnie’s donation. Lonnie confirms he gave $40,000 but defends the pastor who got him off heroin. McCoy warns Price to prosecute the man, not the church, and Pastor Mike is arrested in the middle of a service.
On the stand, Sherman recants, saying he lied to get a deal; jail logs show Pastor Mike’s lawyer visited him the day before. Phone records show Pastor Mike called senior pastor Samuel Bryant right after hearing from Sherman, but Bryant claims clergy privilege. Price argues that fraud by the church voids the privilege, and the judge allows a limited hearing. A former member who gave $61,000 while losing his home turns out to have lost far more gambling. Lonnie praises the church, but Price shows he gave almost $90,000 and is now broke. The judge finds fraud and lifts the privilege.
Spoiler, the ending: Lonnie begs Price to spare his church. Bryant testifies that Pastor Mike admitted ordering Sherman to kill Emily, and the case goes to a plea agreement. When Price goes to tell Lonnie the case is over, he finds him overdosed and calls for an ambulance; whether Lonnie survives is not shown.
Why it stands out
- The title repeats that of a Season 15 episode, “Mammon” (2005); the word is the biblical term for wealth as a corrupting force.
- The trial turns on clergy privilege, which Price can break only by proving that the church itself operates as a fraud.
- Cosgrove and Shaw split over the prosperity gospel, with Shaw explaining why a wealthy pastor can appeal to a struggling congregation.
