Summary

The Investigation

“Benefit of the Doubt” opens with Cosgrove seeing his daughter off to school before he is called to Highbridge Park, where Christina Watkins, 28, has been strangled and stabbed, with an earring ripped out and a lock of hair cut off. She had just published a memoir about waitressing at an upscale downtown restaurant, the Yellow Ribbon, and left a party there for the book around midnight. Actor Niles Harper says he pushed away a drunk man who was haranguing her outside: chef Victor Bernini, whom the book portrays as a drug-addled sex addict and who lost the restaurant soon after it came out.

Footage from a club clears Bernini. The medical examiner finds that Christina was sedated with propofol, tortured elsewhere and stabbed mostly after death, a pattern that brings in Cosgrove’s old mentor, Det. Jerry Ryan, Lily’s godfather, who ties it to an unsolved Chinatown motel killing and others in New Jersey, California and London. Shaw doubts the link, but traffic cameras catch a black Tesla near the party and near where her phone was discarded. It belongs to Harper, whose film and TV shoots line up with the other killings.

Harper admits he drove Christina to the subway, a ride he had not mentioned. Without a warrant, Ryan claims to see blood in Harper’s car, and a search finds her bloody earring. Harper says their encounter got rough, but his apartment yields her hair and a knife set missing its angled boning knife, and he is charged.

The Trial

Defense attorney Rachel Hunt says Harper was home with his girlfriend, Megan, who backs the alibi. Judge Kenneth Maldonado denies the Molineux application to introduce the other killings, and the earring is then suppressed as the product of an illegal search, along with the hair and knives. Ryan and Cosgrove learn that Harper owns property in the Bronx; plate readers put his car there that night, and in a bleached apartment Ryan calls Cosgrove and Shaw over to a necklace engraved from Christina’s mother.

Christina’s mother, Patti, has no receipt for the necklace and mentions that Ryan visited her before the search. Cosgrove tells Ryan he had checked that spot moments earlier and found nothing; Ryan insists he simply missed it. On the stand, Hunt accuses Ryan of planting the necklace, pointing to a party photo in which Christina is not wearing it. When Shaw asks whether he has something to tell him, Cosgrove says only that they got their man.

Spoiler, the ending: The jury convicts Harper of second-degree murder. That evening Ryan arrives at Cosgrove’s home with a $400 bottle of single malt to celebrate, but Cosgrove refuses the gift and tells his daughter’s godfather to leave.
