Summary
The Investigation
“Greater Good” opens at a party, and soon afterward music mogul Wes Morgan is found on a nearby sidewalk, shot once in the chest, his wallet, watch and phone untouched. His wife, Andrea, says people loved him. Artist Kevin “Big K” Mays admits a business dispute with Morgan that night but says they made peace, and that Morgan left chasing a singer.
Video shows a woman, listed under a false name, leaving the party 94 seconds before Morgan. Tracked to her building, she reveals she is Det. Vanessa Washburn of the Security Services Unit, undercover as an aspiring rapper in an investigation of Morgan for trafficking young women and men. She says a Black man of medium build called out to Morgan as she left. A man in a St. Gabriel Prep jacket seen loitering near the venue leads to Angela Ross, 18, a recent St. Gabriel graduate whose condo Morgan pays for and who admits sleeping with him. Her ex-boyfriend, Ahmad Willis, found disturbing messages and images on her phone and told her father.
Detectives search the Washington Heights home of Angela’s father, Lyman Ross, and bring him in. Riley clashes with Washburn, who says race always matters and that solving crimes is not her job, and Shaw calms him. A gun matching the casing, bearing Ross’s DNA, with his prints on its bullets, is recovered from a sewer grate.
The Trial
Ross is charged with second-degree murder and remanded. Andrea Morgan, whose husband backed Baxter’s election, asks Baxter to spare her family a trial, and Ross is offered murder two with 15 years to life, which he resists. Then five women from the party accuse Morgan of raping, drugging and trafficking young people. Baxter has the offer pulled, and when warned that a monstrous victim makes the defendant sympathetic, Baxter insists a deal would imply that killing a monster is less serious.
Defense attorney Brian Harris has Angela describe how Morgan made her sleep with his friends while he filmed it, then calls Ross, who says Morgan raised a champagne bottle at him and he fired in fear for his life. Washburn tells Shaw that Morgan’s hands were empty but refuses to help convict Ross, saying the law has failed Black people. On the stand she claims Morgan held a champagne bottle. Price presses Shaw to impeach her, and Shaw testifies to what she told him and why she did not want to testify.
Spoiler, the ending: In closing, the prosecution urges jurors to apply the law, not street justice, and Ross is convicted. Afterward Washburn confronts Shaw, saying he has destroyed her career, and the two argue over what became of the wish to make a difference that drew them to policing.
Why it stands out
- Director Eriq La Salle, Maura Tierney and guest star Mekhi Phifer were all main cast members of the NBC medical drama ER.
- Shaw has to impeach a fellow Black detective, a younger officer who argues that helping convict a father who killed his daughter’s abuser would not serve the Black community.
