Summary

The Investigation

“Bad News” opens at night in the Ramble, a Central Park cruising spot, where an encounter is interrupted by an argument and a man falls from a bridge, breaking his neck. Calvino and Walker, now official partners, identify Alexander West, who ran the news side of The New York Ledger. A witness, Travis Nell, saw the shove at 11:38 p.m. but not who did it; skin is found under West’s nails.

West’s wife, Susan, says he met confidential sources in the Ramble and left his phone at home. Acting editor Daniella Ferryman points the detectives to senior reporter Mark Lancer, West’s protégé, who says he spent the night finishing a profile of Tanner Hunt, a Democratic Senate candidate in South Carolina. He points them to Zayne Hassim, a Queens taxi-fleet owner West was about to expose, who admits threatening West but was in Cape May; his DNA does not match.

West’s phone shows 26 calls from a fired op-ed writer who had posted a threat. He was on a billionaire’s jet that night, but he tips the detectives that West argued with the Ledger’s owner, Cynthia Morrow, at dinner. Morrow admits ordering 40% staff cuts and AI-written articles; her driver puts her in Connecticut. Street video shows Hunt tailing West. Hunt says West assured him the profile was positive and was heading to meet the reporter who wrote it. A detective spots makeup over a scratch on Lancer’s hand, and Lancer asks for a lawyer.

The Trial

Lancer’s DNA matches, and video shows him slipping out of his building an hour before the killing. Hunt, wary of a news show that has aired a rumor that his campaign paid the Ledger, testifies that West named Lancer at 11:15. Defense attorney Erin Grassley suggests Hunt did it; he was in an Uber with a dash cam. Questioning of Morrow brings out that Lancer had already resigned, undercutting the theory that West was firing him.

The Ledger confirms that West and Lancer were meeting a source but invokes the shield law. The prosecutors use the show’s doubtful bribery story to get a warrant, over an objection that it is unethical, and police seize the paper’s devices. The source, Hunt staffer Brandon Rex, testifies that he told the two men a college classmate had accused Hunt of sexual assault; West called it not newsworthy, Lancer disagreed, and they were arguing at 11:30. Lancer says he lied only to protect his source, but under cross-examination he admits he lost his temper and killed West.

The ending

Spoiler: No verdict is shown. In the last scene Price, congratulated on the case, says they have sent Lancer away for life and that he at least believed in something bigger than himself.

Case outcome: Mark Lancer, guilty verdict. Prosecuted by Nolan Price. Conviction rates
