Summary
The Investigation
“Mother Love” opens with the shooting death of Dawn Bryan, a onetime high school standout voted most likely to succeed who has slid into crack addiction. She is found beaten and shot once with a .45 in her First Avenue apartment, and neighbors say her boyfriend, a dealer called Skate, ran his business out of her place. Her brother, Lucian, says she stole from the family, including their mother’s wedding ring.
An informant points Briscoe and Logan to Skate, real name Jonas Stark, who is hiding at his girlfriend Keisha White’s apartment with a cut on his head. The fatal bullet matches a gun used in a liquor store robbery Stark took part in, but with no weapon and no firm lineup identification, he is released. Dawn’s old friend Janine says Dawn had been badly beaten and was begging for money to pay Skate’s debts, and Keisha says the people he owed beat both of them after Dawn gave him up.
A plumber then finds the .45 in a sewer pipe in Dawn’s building, and Stark’s prints on the clip bring a murder charge. Stark refuses a plea and says he gave Dawn the gun for protection. Robinette traces a safe-deposit key to Dawn’s grandmother, Mary Tillar, who admits Dawn held her at gunpoint for her bearer bonds on the day of the killing. Suspicion falls on Dawn’s father, Fred, who runs a maintenance business and could have planted the gun. Then Dawn’s mother, Virginia, confesses: Dawn threatened to burn the bonds, handed her the gun and begged her to end her misery, and Virginia shot her.
The Trial
Calls pour in urging the office not to prosecute a grieving mother, and a plea with probation is floated. Robinette argues that excusing Virginia would treat a Black victim’s life as mattering less, and the office notes that the parents tried to frame Stark. Stone goes to a grand jury, presenting first-degree manslaughter against Virginia and evidence tampering against Fred.
The medical examiner testifies that Dawn was shot from three to four feet away, and Janine recalls Fred saying his daughter would be better off dead. Virginia’s lawyer persuades Stone to let Lucian speak; he describes Dawn’s thefts and violence and says his father insisted Stark should pay.
Spoiler, the ending: After 14 minutes, the grand jury declines the manslaughter charge and indicts Virginia only for fourth-degree weapon possession, a misdemeanor. Robinette and Fred Bryan then argue over whether the law should bend for Black families after years of bending against them.
Why it stands out
- Robinette pushes for prosecution, arguing that leniency for a Black mother would devalue a Black victim.
- The case ends at the grand jury, which rejects the manslaughter count Stone presents.
- Stone lets the victim’s brother address the grand jury at the defense’s request.
