Summary
“Closure: Part 1” follows Benson’s work with Harper Anderson, a 29-year-old waitress raped in her apartment on the night of a street fair. Benson finds her waiting alone at the hospital. Harper gives a precise account: a man came in through a broken window off the fire escape, said he had a gun, pulled her nightgown over her eyes and hit her when she turned away from a kiss. After 42 minutes he ran her a shower, washed her himself and left by the front door with her wallet, a T-shirt he used to wipe her stomach and her grandmother’s platinum ring with diamond leaves.
At the apartment Stabler wonders aloud whether the attack was staged, pointing to a wet shower curtain, dry soap and marijuana, and Benson pushes back. Harper admits she smoked before a job interview. Sam Lardner, a neighbor with trespassing arrests, admits he watched the rape through her window but claims he never saw the man’s face. Ron Johnson, caught spending $500 on meat with Harper’s card, turns out to have been in a holding cell; he says he found the wallet in the trash. With no other lead, Benson must tell Harper no one is in custody. Meanwhile Benson ends things with Cassidy after one night together, and Stabler, who guesses, urges her to let him down gently.
Six months later Det. Halligan of the 31st Precinct reports a masked Tribeca intruder who used a curling iron as a gun and said “please.” The victim, Jane Tyler, pulled a pistol but froze, and Kenneth Cleary, picked up limping nearby, was released. Jane now admits he raped her and took her father’s watch engraved “Leo.” At Cleary’s home his wife is wearing Harper’s ring; Cleary claims he bought it from a street seller and calls “Leo” his star sign, though he is a Cancer. ADA Abbie Carmichael warns that without Harper there is not even a stolen-property case, and the arraignment clock is running.
Harper has moved. Her ex-boyfriend, Benjy Dowe, describes months of sleeplessness, running shoes worn to bed and a lost job before she ended their relationship. At first she refuses to help, but after Benson insists that closure is a myth, she agrees to come in.
Spoiler, the ending: At a voice lineup each man repeats the rapist’s question, and Harper says her attacker is not there, visibly relieved. Benson then shows her the ring taken from Cleary’s wife, and Harper realizes he was standing in front of her. She recalls believing nothing bad could reach her after her mother’s long illness. The case against Cleary is left unresolved and continues in “Closure: Part 2.”
