Summary
“Stocks & Bondage” opens with investment analyst Layla Briggs found hanged from her bed, her body marked by piercings and old burn scars. Her robe tied over folded arms makes the responding officer suspicious. The medical examiner confirms death by ligature but will not rule on homicide, suicide or accident: Layla was penetrated, yet the robe is spotless. Her mother, Anne Briggs, admits she found Layla in leather gear, dumped it out of shame and covered her before calling police. The recovered outfit carries traces from Layla and a man, and a whip from the same bag turns out to hold $500,000 in diamonds.
Layla worked for Frank Martin’s Martin Global Fund, which paid for her bondage gear on company cards. Dealer David McKuin sold her roughly $9.4 million in stones with a company check signed by finance chief Sho Ling-Fu; Martin calls it a bet on diamond futures. The trail leads to the New Vision Endowment, an eyeglasses charity that spent under $1 million of $18 million on its cause and has no bank account. Its head, David Kelp, admits Layla laundered Martin’s money through it, pressuring him with his own secret life on the bondage circuit.
Party host Anna Faust banned Martin for hurting one of her women, an undocumented Vietnamese immigrant who says he threatened to report her unless she let him choke her with a belt. Federal agents seize the fraud case, Martin vanishes, and Frederick Tucker, a Tennessee auditor chasing Martin over a teachers’ pension fund, offers leads. Posing as a diamond broker called “John DeMunch,” Munch draws Sho Ling-Fu into trying to sell stones; her date book names Kelp as her boyfriend. After Kelp is found shot dead, she reveals she was once Angela Torres, a dancer Martin renamed, and blames Martin. Her tip leads to Tucker’s hotel room, where he says Martin summoned him to Layla’s apartment that night and paid him in diamonds to stay quiet.
Martin beats his girlfriend, office manager Amy Tanner, and uses her to rebook a plane ticket. Detectives pick him up at the airline desk and question him as if they only care about his credit cards. Amy, granted immunity, describes his habit of strangling women and a boyhood story of him and Tucker tying Black girls to trees in Tennessee. Told that both women have turned on him, Martin says Tucker squeezed Layla’s throat during sex, purely for the thrill.
Spoiler, the ending: Tucker shrugs off the old cruelty as a regional difference until Jeffries cuts him off. Read his rights, he learns Martin has blamed him and is told both men will answer for Layla’s death. No trial is shown.
Why it stands out
- Leslie Hendrix is credited as Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers, the medical examiner she also played on the original Law & Order.
- Michelle Hurd’s Det. Monique Jeffries was still a recurring character here; she moved into the main credits from episode 14, “Limitations.”
