Summary
“Stranger” opens with a young woman at the Hallander family’s door announcing that she is Heather, who disappeared at 14 four years earlier. She tells Benson and Stabler that a stranger drugged her the day she fled the apartment after a fight with her sister Nikki, then held her naked in a windowless concrete room, made her call him Daddy and raped her until he forgot the padlock one night. A drive along her escape route falls apart when the landmarks she remembers are not there. A Ledger photographer catches her on the street and the paper prints her picture, angering her older sister, Erica, who ran a website seeking tips for years.
A priest, Father Mike, reports seeing Heather at Mass with an older man on four recent Sundays. Pressed about it, she orders the detectives out, and Huang suggests a captor can control a victim even in public. She then cuts her wrists. At the hospital Dr. Manning finds her blood type is impossible for the Hallanders’ child, Munch’s photo comparison shows a different face, and her tattoo turns out to be a mirror image of Heather’s. She admits she picked Heather from a missing-children website and learned the details from Erica’s blog, saying she needed a family. Arraigned as a Jane Doe on identity theft and fraud, she is held on $20,000 bail.
A tattoo parlor’s card record leads to Carl Vasko, who fits the priest’s description. He runs, and in his basement Benson finds a cell behind a steel door. Blood from his nose on Fin’s sleeve matches semen on the girl’s dress, and her own DNA shows she is Kristen Vucelik, taken from Ohio six years earlier. Vasko is her father, Carl Vucelik, who changed his name and kept her from her mother, Marcie. Benson works to get Kristen out of jail and learns that her father had shown her a fake notice of her mother’s death; Kristen is reunited with Marcie, and Carl is denied bail.
Spoiler, the ending: Before her flight home, Kristen goes missing. Mrs. Hallander admits that Kristen had come to warn her that Nikki threatened her with whatever happened to the real Heather, and that she has known for some time that Nikki killed Heather. The detectives find Nikki forcing Kristen up a ladder at the site; Nikki says Heather caught her using drugs and that the fall was an accident. As Kristen is urged down, Nikki threatens to jump, but Erica talks her down and she is arrested.
