Summary
“Educated Guess” starts with a stakeout for a serial groper that ends with Rollins and her partner arresting Darren Bickford, who is naked, feverish and hallucinating. While he waits handcuffed to a wheelchair on a locked ward at LaGuardia Psychiatric, left alone by guard captain Charles Lee, he sees a man in an on-call room choking a young woman who is on top of him. Bickford tells the arraignment judge, who orders SVU to look into it. His description, dark-blond hair, a hospital bracelet and a deep scar on her left arm, fits patient Gia Eskas.
Gia, a repeat patient who had to be sedated that night after making a noose, denies being raped but agrees to a rape kit. It finds an unknown man’s sperm and old scarring that suggests years of sodomy. Her mother, Diane, says Gia began making and recanting rape claims at 14, after her father was diagnosed with schizophrenia; Diane’s sister, Bella Zane, was at the hospital that night for surgery. Amaro turns up a fight in which patient Jay Delaney shook Gia, and Jay, explaining that he was protecting her, says Lee takes girls into empty rooms for sex. Lee claims Gia gave him oral sex the next day in exchange for a gun he never supplied.
Gia admits to Rollins that she wanted the gun because her uncle George, Bella’s husband, has raped her since she was 14 and got into the hospital to do it again. Rollins tells her she was assaulted too, and later says something on the job was part of why she left her old post. Video shows George posing as a doctor that night. Arrested, he describes a consensual love affair that he says began when Gia turned 17, mentions her pink bra and produces a note reading “George, I love you,” which Gia says she wrote at 12. Diane and Bella refuse to believe any of it.
Spoiler, the ending: Searching the Zanes’ house, the detectives find George’s toolbox under the bed he shares with Bella; Diane, who has cleaned the house for 15 years, says it was never kept there. The lock opens to Gia’s birthday, and inside are photos of Gia in a pink bra dated April 24, 2001, her 14th birthday. Diane accuses Bella of knowing, and Bella calls the pictures fake. George faces multiple counts of sexual assault covering ten years. Gia, who does not want her mother to visit yet, expects a long recovery, and Benson tells her that having survived the abuse, she will survive the healing too.
Why it stands out
- Natasha Lyonne guest stars as Gia, with J. Smith-Cameron as her mother and Carrie Preston as her aunt.
- Rollins, new to the squad this season, tells Benson that something that happened to her on the job was part of the reason she left, one of the first hints at her past.
