Summary
“Russian Brides” begins with the discovery of a woman who has been raped and beaten to death, her face sanded off, her teeth pulled and her fingertips cut away. Only two tattoos are left: a butterfly and a Cyrillic phrase, “Mother, forgive me,” that marks a prostitute for the Russian mob. Sand in the body points to a rebuilt city beach, and in Brighton Beach Fin finds the woman’s photo on a restaurant wall and learns her name, Lena, and that she held an engagement party there with Daniel Carter, a 48-year-old widower who runs a housing nonprofit.
A call through Carter’s neighbor Luis leads police to the Chelsea Piers carousel, where Carter is waiting for Lena. He met her on a Russian bride website and brought her to New York after she described a jealous ex who stalked her; after their party kidnappers demanded $100,000, and he paid the $80,000 he had. In photos from his trip to Russia he spots the ex in a crowd. The site’s host company leads to a Brighton Beach travel agency, and under pressure its operator names the man as Liev Bodrov, “the Butcher,” a Russian mobster whom Interpol links to four identical murders abroad. Carter then finds Lena online under the name Irene, still alive.
Cragen decides to go undercover himself as Michael, a sober, widowed children’s-rights advocate, and Cabot warns him not to get intimate with the suspect. Over drinks Irene draws him out, but at his hotel room she senses he is not what he seems and bolts, and she is arrested. Lena says the bride sites front for Liev’s blackmail and prostitution: she charms rich men, fakes a kidnapping for ransom, and Liev kills one of his prostitutes and disfigures her so the target believes Lena is dead. She says Liev holds her four-year-old daughter, Anna, and agrees to set up a second date with Cragen that Liev will watch.
Spoiler, the ending: When Liev turns up armed, police move in, and Lena, told he is gone, cries that his men will kill Anna. She leads the squad to a Brighton Beach safe house, where a shootout leaves one officer saved by his vest and no child is found; Lena then gets hold of an officer’s gun, shoots a 22-year-old officer at point-blank range and runs before police catch her. Carter learns that Lena’s daughter was abducted and murdered four years earlier, that Liev killed those responsible, and that Lena has worked with him ever since. Carter agrees to testify, and when Cragen starts to bring up what he said on the wire, Benson says she does not know what he means.
Why it stands out
- Cragen leaves his desk to work undercover himself, telling the squad the key is a cover identity close to one’s own; his story includes Vietnam service, giving up drinking and a late wife named Marge.
- Timothy Busfield guest stars as Daniel Carter and Izabella Miko as Lena.
- The beach-sand evidence draws on samples the medical examiner’s office collected after the real Gilgo Beach murders on Long Island.
